It doesn’t have to be true. Real Smart People are true.
Remember “Baptist News Global,” a voice of “the wider progressive movement”?
If the Church is wrong about key issues–marriage, for instance–and the Bible is wrong about it, too… does it not follow, of necessity, that God Himself is wrong?
Which is what all forms of religious “progressivism” are about: God being wrong. In fact, that’s probably the only thing you need to know about progressivism.
Speaking as a former atheist, I would ask those people (and in fact I used to do so), “But if your Bible made so many mistakes, and if the teachings of your church were so mistaken over so many centuries, why should I believe what you’re telling me now, and why should I even want to be a part of your silly ‘church’ in the first place?”
How did they answer you?
They really couldn’t. They mostly repeated their initial assertions, including the circular argument that “we know better now” or “times have changed since then” — all of which just reinforced my skeptical objections.
*Sigh*
It all comes down to one thing; is the Bible reliable as the word of God? I believe that it is, and that’s enough for me to trust it. The Bible doesn’t ask me to take unnecessary risks, or to sacrifice all practicality in order to serve God. It asks fairly little, but provides valuable guidance. Second guessing God is not a smart move.
