Europe’s Bad Habit: Tyranny

A German newspaper editor has been sentenced to seven months in prison… no, she didn’t shoot or rob anybody… for making fun of the Minister of the Interior.

J.D. Vance Was Right: Editor-in-Chief of Germany’s Right-Wing ‘Deutschland-Kurier’ Given Seven Month Prison Sentence for Posting Meme of Interior Minister Holding “I Hate Freedom of Speech” Sign

This is crazy. “I DO NOT hate freedom of speech! And I’ll have you locked up in jail for saying that I do!”

Our own country was founded largely by Europeans who’d had their fill of Europe. The nations of Europe can’t seem to kick the tyranny habit. It’s not just Germany. In the United Kingdom 30 people are arrested every day–that’s some 12,000 a year–for “offensive online messages” https://freespeechunion.org/police-make-30-arrests-a-day-for-offensive-online-messages/).

And they had the gall to be offended when our Vice President J.D. Vance called them out on it.

“Do you think the American taxpayer is going to stand for that?” he said. “You get thrown in jail in Germany for posting a mean tweet?”

No, they don’t much care for free speech over there. And now they’re proving it.

  1. I fear that Europe and the UK have forgotten the lessons of the World Wars. Sadly, I believe that they are doomed to repeat history, and I fear that the next go ‘round will be horrendous. Amen, come quickly, Lord Jesus.

  2. It isn’t only Europe. We have our own tyrannies going on right here in the USA. Most of it is done through “cancel culture” — which can bankrupt people — rather than actual prison sentences, but the lawfare can sometimes try to put people in jail as well as bankrupting them.

Interestingly enough, a news item just came through one of my news feeds about a lawfully elected Maine legislator who was forbidden to serve her term because she’d posted an item on Facebook implicitly criticizing boys competing in girls’ sports:

In case that link doesn’t work, here’s a the background paragraph from the article:
“Maine State Representative Laurel D. Libby (R-90) cannot vote or speak on the floor of the House of Representatives since the Democrat-dominated chamber passed a resolution of censure by a 75-70, party-line vote on Tuesday, February 25. After seeing a male who identifies as female win a girls state championship, Libby posted a picture of the young man on Facebook on February 17 with the message: “John tied for 5th place in boys pole vault. Tonight, ‘Katie’ won 1st place in the girls’ Maine State Class B Championship.” Maine Democrats barred Libby from discussing the underlying issue, then voted to stop her from representing her more than 9,000 constituents until she accepts full responsibility for placing the child in danger and apologizes.”

Different in degree, but not in kind, from the sentencing of Marine Le Pen in France or the overturning of Romanian elections, but only in degree — and only one example.

    1. “Whatever happens, we’ve got Trump–and they have not.”
Far Left Crazy will not go gently into that good night. They’ll fight to keep their power over us. We have to fight harder.

    2. PS–I’ve read the attached article: this is an outrage. But that’s what Democrats do. They are rats gnawing at our civil liberties.
We’ll have to watch this case closely: it’s too important to ignore.
