‘Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee’

It’s cold and grey and rainy here, with a bit of thunder thrown in–so let’s have a hymn that makes its own sunshine–Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee. Turn up the volume and revel in it!

I don’t know who’s singing this, but thank you very much, whoever you are. And thank you, Beethoven, for composing this divine piece of music.

‘Praise to the Lord, the Almighty’

I found this hymn, coupled with the beautiful examples of God’s handiwork, very moving–Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, sung by the Altar of Praise Men’s Chorale.

‘Faith of Our Fathers’

Believe it or not, we used to sing this hymn in high school, when we had assembly on Friday mornings. But that was before they discovered how much harm it did us.

Faith of Our Fathers, by the kids from Fountainview Academy on their tour of Italy–nad 50 years later I’m still trying to figure out just how it harmed us.

‘He Hideth My Soul’

If you can fit eight people into your living room, they might as well sing.

Fanny Crosby wrote He Hideth My Soul in 1890, and today it still works to praise the Lord our God. Sung by Nathan and Lyle, with family and friends, in Denton County, Texas.

By Request, ‘Do You Know My Jesus?’

And thank you, Phoebe, for requesting this–Do You Know My Jesus?, sung by the kids from Fountainview Academy, at the Ford Farm in Eureka, California.

These last two hymns have cleansed my soul. It always gets dirty when I have to write about the colleges.

By Request, ‘Trust and Obey’

This is one of my favorite hymns, and thank you, Lisa Beth, for requesting it: Trust and Obey.

Our King is the rightful King of kings and Lord of lords. The others are nothing at all.

By Request, ‘By Faith’

Susan asked for this–By Faith, by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend, sung by Keith and Kristyn Getty: a hymn that picks up where Hebrews 11 leaves off.

“Walk by faith and not by sight”–it would be a good thing, to know how to do this. Prayer will be part of that answer, I think.

One More Time, ‘Up From the Grave He Arose’

I’m sorry, but I just can’t get enough of this hymn–Up From the Grave He Arose, sung by the Voice of Eden, from somewhere in India. Wow! We have family in India, and some of them can sing up a storm.

Christ’s resurrection changed the world. As the hymn tells us, “Death cannot keep his prey.” Jesus has broken its chains forever.

‘All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name’

Please don’t mind me posting my favorite hymns fairly often. I’ll post yours, too–all you’ve got to do is ask. Only a few of you ask, but the hymn shop’s open to all.

All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name, sung by the choir at First Plymouth Church in Lincoln, Nebraska.

By Request, ‘When I Survey the Wondrous Cross’

Requested by Joshua, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, sung by the King’s College Choir, Cambridge.

They sound this hymn often on the bells, across the street at St. Francis’ Cathedral–and now I know what hymn it is. Thanks, Joshua.
