Robots Rule?

A mayoral candidate in Japan says that he, if elected, will work to replace politicians with robots (https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/world-news/695699/cambridge-analytica-facebook-ai-robots-mayor-japan-replace-politicians).

Says the Tama New Town politician who has not as yet volunteered to replace himself with a robot, “Let artificial intelligence determine policies by gathering city data and we can create clearly defined policies.”

Uh… Will they be good policies? As in just, workable, efficient, decent? Well, all right–are we getting good policies now, with the human beings still in charge? How much worse can robots do?

But I don’t think you have to be unusually prescient to have an instinctive aversion to this whole idea.

Why does anyone believe that flawed, sinful, not really all that intelligent human beings can create robots that will be flawless, morally perfect, and incredibly smart? It would be like God creating another god greater than Himself. Why do we think we can make machines that are better than ourselves?

I suspect because we’re idiots.
