This is probably as close as we can come to hearing how this hymn sounded in the 18th century, when Charles Wesley wrote it–O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing, performed by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band. Sounded pretty fine, didn’t it?

I’m feeling kind of wrung out today, but I love this hymn, O Worship the King, and this performance of it by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band. You can make out the lyrics, for one thing. This was the first hymn I learned to play on my harmonica. I am glad to keep it in my heart.

‘Light of the World’–Plus Prayer Request for Me
You’ll pardon me for indulging in one of my very favorite hymns–Light of the World, by Charles Wesley, sung by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band. My path needs some light right now, and I don’t mean maybe.
Please pray for me! Again, I’m not free to give details, but I have more than one family member in grave danger, health-wise, and my livelihood suddenly seems to be on thin ice. And that’s all I want even to mention. Plenty to keep me wide-awake all night.
Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me. O Son of God have mercy on me, and help me.

John Bunyan’s Hymn
This is the only hymn known for sure to have been by John Bunyan, famous for Pilgrim’s Progress. It reminds us that the pilgrim’s way is hard, but that we have a Helper who can never fail. To Be a Pilgrim, by John Bunyan: and this is my favorite rendition of it, by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.
Encore, ‘O Worship the King’
I love this hymn, the first hymn I ever learned to play on my harmonica. It can be traced back to the 1500’s, and the melody as we know it first appeared in 1708. This rendition, in 18th-century style, is by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band: O Worship the King.

My Own Hymn Request (‘Light of the World’)
I hope you don’t mind my posting this again, this morning: Light of the World, by Charles Wesley, performed by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band. This is the hymn I want to take with me into oral surgery. I’m not good at having bits of myself cut out. I know, I know–after it’s all over, it won’t seem like such a big deal. But just now, I find the whole idea extremely daunting. Please, Lord, give me strength: in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Again, Again, ‘Light of the World’
I hope you don’t mind my posting this hymn for the umpteenth time–Light of the World by Charles Wesley, performed by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band. This hymn never fails to stir my soul.
For Jesus Christ is the light of the world, that lights everyone who comes into the world. He is the Light they can’t put out, not all their hellish legions of the ungodly: God knows who they are.
I’m waiting for the hospital to call with another update on Aunt Joan. They were too busy to talk to me when I called earlier this morning.
