Play it Again: ‘To Be a Pilgrim’

One of the commenters on youtube called this “the great hymn NOT heard in Protestant churches.” But you can hear it here–John Bunyan’s hymn, To Be a Pilgrim, performed by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band. It’s one of my favorities, and I think the churches would be the better for hearing it more often.

‘The Angel Gabriel’

So what’s he doing, playing this carol two weeks after Christmas?

Just saying again: Christmas needs to work all year. We need for God’s Spirit to be on the job 24/7.

Hence The Angel Gabriel, sung by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.

‘O Worship the King’

This is the hymn that greeted me this morning, so this is the one I’ll post first–O Worship the King, performed by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.

But we are still taking requests for Christmas hymns, and if you’ve got any, I’m happy to post them.

In my own lifetime the world has never needed Christmas more than it needs it now.

‘Light of the World’

Lord, we need your light!

I like the title of this album by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band: “Sing Lustily and with Good Courage.” Or, as I once heard a wise woman say on the radio, “When things get dark, and you don’t know what to do–sing louder!”

Light of the World, by Charles Wesley: for the true Light, that lighteth everyone that cometh into the world.

(For Openers) The Sussex Carol

No Christmas hymns submitted for the contest this morning–where did everybody go? So let me see if I can start the ball rolling with this, one of my favorites: The Sussex Carol, performed by Maddy Priot and the Carnival Band, the old-fashioned way. Is that somebody playing a sackbut in the background? Wow!

By Request, ‘God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen’

Heidi asked for this one, the first request this morning: God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. I opted for this by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band–there’s something about their 18th-century sound that goes just right with this hymn.

‘To Be a Pilgrim’ (My Request)

To Be a Pilgrim, by John Bunyan, performed by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band–I hope nobody minds me posting this again: my spirit needs some pumping up this morning.

The road is hard.

Keep going.

‘Light of the World’

O Jesus Christ Our Lord, it’s dark down here! Way dark! Be thou our light, O Son of God. You are the light the darkness can’t put out, that lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

This thought came to me yesterday: We live by God’s word or not at all.

Hymn by Charles Wesley, performed by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.

‘O Thou Who Camest From Above’

Charles Wesley wrote this hymn in 1762–O Thou Who Camest from Above, performed here by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band… the old-fashioned way.

How did the builders of so many English churches get their churches to look like they grew on the spot as living things? Too many of the new churches look like somebody just accidentally dropped them there.

‘Jesus, Lover of My Soul’

It’s said Charles Wesley wrote Jesus, Lover of My Soul while hiding from thugs who meant to attack him: this happened on a visit to Ireland.

Performed the old-fashioned way by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.
