I’m trying to stir up your Christmas spirit, folks! Let me fall back on this old, old Burgundian carol, Pat-a-Pan, one of my all-time favorites. This is an instrumental version, played medieval-style. If this one doesn’t work, I’ll just have to try again tomorrow.
You don’t hear many Christmas carols in August. I stumbled over this one this morning, and couldn’t resist posting it–the old Burgundian carol, Pat-a-Pan, performed by David Archuleta… with the first verse sung in the original Burgundian French. How often do you get to hear that?
When I played this, it stirred my soul. Not that I call for every day to be Christmas: that would quickly ruin it. But it’s a good thing to remember, every day, that Jesus Christ Our Savior, Jesus Christ Our King, has indeed come in the flesh, come right into this fallen world of ours–and will surely come again.
In fact, He is already here with us, every day.

Pat-a-Pan is a Burgundian Christmas carol, first published in 1720. This performance is by the Harrisburg Baptist Church in the 2010 Northern Mississippi Christmas Festival, and they really go to town on it.
This carol was on the repertoire of the Franklin Junior High School Christmas program of 1962. I ought to know: our whole home room got drafted into the school choir, willy-nilly.
We are not able to travel to spend Christmas Day with my brother and sister. It’s dense fog this morning, with heavy rain forecast throughout the afternoon. The Garden State Parkway is daunting even in nice weather. In bad weather, the cars wind up scattered all over the place like Tinker Toys.
