Who Says Cats Aren’t Lovey?

This cat’s name is Ophie, and she loves her daddy.

I don’t know how it got started, the canard (don’t you love it when you get to use a word like that?) that cats are “aloof” and only interested in you as someone who can open the can of cat food. All the cats we’ve ever had have been wonderfully affectionate.

And now it’s time to feed them!

Video Treat: Dogs Behaving Oddly

Dogs have some pretty extraordinary reactions to some very ordinary things–like a shadow, a bug, an orange peel, or a plastic bottle. They’re smart enough so that you never quite know what they’re going to do: a dog can invent a reaction, off the top of his head, that you never saw before.

I think they do it because it’s fun.

Video Treat: Cat and Goat Kung-fu

Animals do know how to have fun! Check out the baby goat provoking the cat to chase him. It’s amazing, how agile they are. If I ever tried this on a flight of stairs, it’d be sayonara for sure. You’d think hooves without toes would make for pretty tricky footing–but not for goats. It’s all the cat can do to keep up with the kid.

Sanity Break: Cuddly Owls

Until youtube came along, who ever guessed that owls are… cuddly? I mean, who knew anybody who had a pet owl?

How did God ever think of creating these birds? The more closely you look at them, the more–well, unusual–they seem to be. Nevertheless, they can be cuddly.

Bonus Video: Armadillo Bath

This ought to settle the question, Do armadillos bathe?

So if you have a pet armadillo, be sure to provide him with bathing facilities.

‘Don’t Tickle Me, Elmo!’

This post disappeared into the void a minute ago, the first time I tried to put it up. Maybe the computer’s getting ticklish.

I’ve known a lot of ticklish cats, but the one in this video takes the cake.

Sanity Break: Cats & Tails

Our cats, more ambitious than these, have discovered practical uses for their tails. Tails are for sweeping things off the table, preventing human beings from watch movies, and waking human beings who have fallen asleep.

Do you ever get the impression that cats are not entirely convinced that their tails are actually part of their bodies?

Sanity Break: Dogs and Stairs

Pity the poor dog who can’t figure out how to get up or down a flight of stairs. Some try it backwards, some sideways, and a few have even more creative approaches.

There is no truth to the rumor that Rutgers University is offering a four-year degree program in Going Up/Coming Down Stairs. I mean, not four whole years of it…

Video Treat: Cats Are Not Always That Smart

Behold a lot of cats who wind up in one of those “Now what do I do??” moments. You do wonder what they were thinking when they embarked on some of these enterprises.

Makes them more like people than we thought!

Sanity Break: Pet Chinchilla

Did you ever see a cuter animal than this? It’s a pet chinchilla.

When I was a boy there was a fad for raising chinchillas at home, with the idea of getting rich by selling their pelts. I knew people who did this, but none of them got rich; and I’m glad that fad has petered out. People cheated themselves out of knowing and loving, and being loved by, some mighty appealing little critters.
