‘Oh, Sinner Man’

Take a Caribbean spiritual and move it to the Irish Sea, complete with seals and grey waters, grey skies–I don’t know why it works, but it does. Oh, Sinner Man! Where You Gonna Run To? Complete with cold water and hot mandolin.

‘Every Time I Feel the Spirit’

Here’s another one we used to sing in school, before a lot of really clever judges discovered in the Constitution a long-concealed prohibition of any public expression of Christian faith. We didn’t sing it quite like the Iowa Wesleyan College Choir, but we did our best–“Every time I feel the Spirit movin’ in my heart, I will pray…”

‘We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder’

You will see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.       –John 1:51

The ladder Jacob dreamed of, in Genesis 28:12-15, is the bridge from earth to heaven, and from heaven to earth; and the bridge is Jesus Christ Our Lord, the Son of God, the Son of Man.

So, you see, this old spiritual has it right. We are always climbing Jacob’s ladder. Jesus is the only way to get to God.
