Here’s a classic spiritual, requested by Phoebe–We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder, sung by Bernice Johnson Reagon.

Would you believe we used to sing these in public school? It’s true: big, big difference between then and now.

You will see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.       –John 1:51

The ladder Jacob dreamed of, in Genesis 28:12-15, is the bridge from earth to heaven, and from heaven to earth; and the bridge is Jesus Christ Our Lord, the Son of God, the Son of Man.

So, you see, this old spiritual has it right. We are always climbing Jacob’s ladder. Jesus is the only way to get to God.
