‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’

People have been loving this hymn since the 1860s–What a Friend We Have in Jesus. Here we have it performed by the students at Fountainview Academy, British Columbia.

‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’

My wife’s medicine that started out so well has produced difficulties, so off we go to the doctor. Maybe he can prescribe something else. Please pray for us.

Meanwhile, the friendship of Our Lord Jesus Christ is something we all need. What a Friend We Have in Jesus, this rendition by Alan Jackson–and now I have to go…

By Special Request: Doc Watson, ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’

You don’t have to ask me twice to post this one! Erlene only had to ask once–What a Friend We Have in Jesus, sung by Doc Watson. How many times do you suppose he’s sung this hymn? And it still chokes him up. Well, he’s not the only one, that’s for sure. Take it to the Lord in prayer–amen!

‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’ (Burl Ives)

Sometimes I whistle this hymn when I go for a walk, and several people have told me it was a pleasure to them, to hear it. And it’s a pleasure to me, to hear Burl Ives sing it–What a Friend We Have in Jesus.

‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’ (Doc Watson)

Yes, I know I’ve posted this before. Indulge me; I’m supposed to be at the doctor’s office while you’re hearing this, and if I don’t fumble the procedure, it’s Wednesday morning.

What a Friend We Have in Jesus–by Doc Watson, who must have played this hymn a thousand times up to this point, and still plays it like he means it with every fiber of his being. I whistle this one when I need it. Which is often.

Encore, ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’

Think how many times Doc Watson must have sung this hymn in public; and yet he’s still so moved by it, his voice almost breaks. What a Friend We Have in Jesus–and what a friend we need.

I’ve been taking it to him in prayer a lot, these last two days: my wife is having a very hard time with her breathing. Please unite your prayers to ours: O Jesus, thou Son of David–have mercy on us, and heal my wife. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’ (Youth Choir)

People stop and smile when I walk down the street whistling this hymn, What a Friend We Have in Jesus. All hope for us is not yet gone.

Sung by EpicYouthWatsonville. High country by God the Father.

The Story of ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’

Linda posted this in a comment the other day. The story behind the hymn: I didn’t know it. I stand in awe of the saint who wrote those words.

Doc Watson, ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’

You don’t mind if I post one of my favorite hymns this morning, do you? Doc Watson singing What a Friend We Have in Jesus–how many hundreds of times do you reckon he’s sung this hymn in public? And he still can’t get through it without choking up. Well, if I am moved to whistle it while I walk, it’s not unknown for some to stop and listen: and to say “Thank you!”

Encore: Doc Watson, ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’

If this hymn doesn’t stir your soul, better check to see if you still have one: What a Friend We Have in Jesus.

Doc Watson, with untold thousands of hours of experience performing songs and hymns, feels this one so keenly, he is almost unable to get through it without his voice breaking. Doc, we know! Same thing happens to me when I try to whistle it. In fact, it’s happening to me now: the ineffable joy of feeling the presence of the Lord.
