My Ten Favorite Hymns

This Is My Father's World - with Lyrics - YouTube

(I am doing the whole post over from scratch because it just disappeared before I could finish posting it. I hate computers.)

I’m always inviting you all to submit your favorite hymns to be posted here and shared with others. But then I got to wonder, “What are my favorite hymns? The top ten, say?” All right. In no particular order, here are ten of my favorites.

This Is My Father’s World; Be Thou My Vision; Light of the World; All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name; Jesus Saves; Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee; I Sing the Mighty Power of God; Behold the Mountain of the Lord; Revive Us Again; A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

If I were to write the list an hour from now, or tomorrow, or next week, it would probably be different. I have a lot more than just ten, but one has to stop somewhere. So just now, those are my favorites.

What are yours?

‘Are You Washed?’

Your Favorite Hymns continues with Are You Washed (in the Blood of the Lamb)? This has been a well-loved hymn since it was published in 1878. Sung here by the Antrim Mennonite Choir.

The hymn shop is open to all. Some of you have been here for years and never requested a hymn. It’s not like we’ll run out of them or anything.

‘For All the Saints’

These are the hymns that readers have asked for, they’re on the list of Your Favorite Hymns… And I’m more than halfway down the list, so you’re all invited to add to it. Don’t worry, we won’t run out of hymns.

This is For All the Saints, by Vaughan Williams, sung by the First United Methodist Sanctuary Choir in Houston.

‘Eternal Father, Strong to Save’

This is the U.S. Navy’s official hymn, Eternal Father, Strong to Save. Whenever I hear it I think of my father, Jersey-born and bred, who’d never been farther away from home than Pennsylvania: fresh out of high school in the midst of World War II, straight to the recruiting officer, and on to California, the Pacific, and the Philippines. And him all of 18 years old. It’s very hard to imagine. Such wars ought not to be; but that’s the fallen world: we didn’t get into our troubles by obeying God’s word.

‘St. Patrick’s Breastplate’

Here’s one I hadn’t heard before–St. Patrick’s Breastplate, sung by Jean Watson. It’s patterned after an ancient prayer attributed to St. Patrick.

We’re halfway down the list of Your Favorite Hymns, so now is a good time to add to it.

‘What Child Is This?’

We usually save this hymn for Christmas-time, but it’s just as sweet and moving in September–What Child Is This? We are not told who’s singing it: very nice, whoever you are.

We’re halfway down the list of Your Favorite Hymns, so don’t be bashful about adding to it.

‘O Sons and Daughters of the King’

They sometimes play this on the bells of St. Francis’, across the street from me, but I never knew its name until now–O Sons and Daughters of the King. This is a very nice rendition of the hymn, but we are not told who sings it.

Your Favorite Hymns continues.

‘Jesus, Priceless Treasure’

Here’s a hymn by Johann Sebastian Bach, sung by the Lutheran Quartet–Jesus, Priceless Treasure.

Your Favorite Hymns continues day by day: please feel free to add to the list.

‘Thy Strong Word’

This hymn has a lot of go to it–Thy Strong Word, by Koine. Your Favorite Hymns continues day by day: please feel free to add to the list. The hymn shop’s open all the time.

‘I Know That My Redeemer Lives’

Claire Crosby was only seven years old when she made this video, I Know That My Redeemer Lives.

Your Favorite Hymns continues: please feel free to add to the list.
