I really do hate those jumpin’, spinnin’ kicks

I’m afraid a lot of the contemporary Young Adults fiction that I read isn’t fit to line a bird cage.

Not Only Dumb, but Evil

Some of this is just dumb adults cleverly (in their own minds) writing down to young readers. But there’s also stuff out there that’s downright toxic.

Then again, there’s fiction written for adults that’s even worse. You wouldn’t think that would even be possible, but a lot of authors manage it.

The thing to remember is: The fiction we consume in such great quantities is a passive form of self-education. So be careful of what you teach yourself.

  1. The nonsense that is poured out by ‘authors’ is truly astounding. I’m part of a self-publishing group on Facebook which, for my purposes, is helpful because of the marketing advice and the emphasis on a professional product; but so many of the authors just write utter trash and no one dares say a word no matter how degraded the subject matter or the cover. People even think it’s funny to jokingly come up with stuff like ‘velociraptor romance’. Bestiality barely raises an eyebrow. ‘Erotic’ romance; ‘dark’ romance (extreme cruelty on the part of the ‘hero’, whom the heroine eventually falls in love with despite him having all the qualities of a psychopath); homo romance, from ‘sweet and clean’ YA (lol) up to adult; harem romance, where the main character hooks up with several people at one time.
Utter, utter trash. Sometimes it feels like what I write is just a tiny candle in the a sea of darkness.

Note: whenever I see one of these covers, or someone posts something about a trashy book they’re writing, I just hide all posts from that person. Whatever they have to say has no value to me.
