‘Goober Peas’

I don’t know why I’m posting this–but why not? We’ve had enough bad nooze for one morning. So Burl Ives sings a nonsense song from the Civil War…

Which proves that God has built into the human spirit a certain amount of effervescence–even in the midst of a calamity like the Civil War, we can dream up funny songs. As long as we can do that, we will endure; we will not be crushed. Laughter is a gift from God: and God forbid that we should ever be without it.

  1. Perfect song to accompany my lunch of peanut butter and orange marmalade sandwich. Love them goober peas! African name: nguba

  2. Well, WOW, this song goes well with what I have been experiencing for the last 4 days. My internet has been down since last Thursday, so I have missed everything- and I do mean everything. I am finally back this Tuesday morning, and have all three portions of email filled with hundreds of “messages” to be deleted so I can get back to sanity. (not sure about that sanity so far as I am concerned)

  3. How odd … just the day before yesterday this song started running through my head. Must be something in the air. 🙂

  4. I came across this Civil War humor in my reading of “The Killer Angels:” The Union soldiers captured some Rebel soldiers in the first battle at Gettysburg and asked them why they were fighting. The Rebs said they were fighting for their “rats.”
