Phoebe asked for this classic spiritual, and we’re happy to oblige. Gee, I remember singing this at Y Camp sing-along–Go Down, Moses. “Down to Egypt-land… Tell old Pharaoh, Let my people go.” I think this rendition by Louis Armstrong is the most popular one. (Sorry–couldn’t find one with more verses.)
Hey, everybody–time to fill the hymn-cart again!
Great!
I keep thinking we should use this as a theme song if and when the Powers That Be declare the next round of lockdowns. But no, we’d probably be accused of (a) cultural appropriation and (b) incitement to violence.
Not to mention racism. White people listening to a black man’s music is “inappropriate.”
Speaking of Satchmo and/or singalongs, by the way, how about another old favorite: “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
Putting it on the list… unless you think I can get away with posting another hymn today.
Well, I’ve written my NWV column and now I’ve got the song in my head–so why not?
