How did “chicken” ever come to mean “chicken”? Man, these hens and roosters are kicking eagles down the stairs! Why do the eagles even bother? Maybe, as Ian Malcolm said in The Lost World, “They are misinformed.”

Wow, I know chickens can be quite aggressive, but I had never seen anything this extreme.
When we lived on the ranch, and our younger son was very young at the time, a couple of
the roosters intimidated him all the time, but we had a collie dog, and he would call the
dog and have him take care of the aggressor.
That’s amazing. Our Creator has endowed all of his creation with much more than meets the eye. The bird we think of as completely domestic can fend off the most feared raptor of the avian world.
I was once surrounded by a flock of turkeys, in a farm yard, and had to flee. Years later, I was trying to approach a piece of equipment and was chased away by a very determined goose. However, I broke the code, and found that if I crouched and extended my arms like wings, I became the biggest goose on the block and prevailed. In the same job, which frequently placed me in rural settings, I once met a rooster who was about as aggressive as anything this side of a Prairie Rattler.
Good advice!
That’s me, the goose-buster. 🙂
I had a job that took me all over the plains east of Denver and I saw a lot of wildlife. (Although the goose in question was definitely domestic.) Ever been chased by a skunk? I have. I had a helluva battle with a prairie rattler once. This was not just a frightened reptile trying to defend himself, it was war. One of the two of us was going to die that day, and thankfully, it was him. After his head was removed, his body was still rattling away, probably for hours thereafter.
I went hiking on a state nature trail with some of my friends, and on a narrow path, we encountered a baby skunk. I reckoned the skunk had to be used to people, living there, so I just stepped aside and let him pass. But my two friends allowed the skunk to force them all the way back to the parking lot.
