By Request, ‘The Old Rugged Cross’

This hymn used to make me cry when I was a boy in Sunday school. I guess I wasn’t the only one, because no one made fun of me.

Requested by Phoebe, sung by the Martin Brothers–The Old Rugged Cross.

  1. Yes, this is heart rending for anyone with a tender heart, and a reasonable view of the subject. It is one of my favorite hymns.

  2. I love this hymn. It’s sad, but it’s also very comforting in times of sorrow or pain. Christ did say that to follow him we must take up our cross — but when we do that, we take up part of his, as Simon of Cyrene did. And when we embrace the Cross, we embrace Christ. We Catholics believe that we can offer up our own suffering as a share in Christ’s suffering and offer both to the Father as a prayer. It’s a wonderful privilege. We can turn something ugly into something beautiful — just as Jesus did on the Cross.

    1. I do wish my Aunt Betty, the nun, was still with us. She had a very long career as a teacher. She died, oh, twenty years ago; and I still miss her.
