Guaranteed admission today; guaranteed degree tomorrow.
(I haven’t been up to posting much, these past few days, but I can’t let this story slide any farther.)
This is one of the silliest damnfool things I ever heard of.
Utah has “guaranteed” college admission to all high school students in the state, regardless of their grade-point average (https://ushe.edu/utah-launches-admit-utah-a-simplified-path-to-college-admissions-for-all-high-school-students/). Utah has 16 state colleges and university. Pick one! And you’re in!
Gee… What if you’re a juvenile delinquent? Fooey! If you’re out of jail, you can be in college. What if you’ve flunked every subject because you’re a nitwit? Poohbah! There’s no such thing as being too dumb to go to college!
I could not find any mention of how this scheme is to be paid for… but I think we can guess by whom.
And once you’ve got guaranteed admissions for everybody, one and all, how big a step is it to a guaranteed degree? In the subject of your choice, of course. I’ll have a Masters in Nuclear Physics, please.
At that point a college education will have no more value whatsoever. It’s been inching toward that goal for years. Looks like Utah wants to get there first.
When I was young, I thought it would be great to go to college, but just when I was about ready to go, my parents decided to move from Missouri to Washington State, so that did away with my plan. Now that I see what colleges are like, I’m glad it didn’t work out. I have two grandsons who never attended college; one now has his own business and is doing well, the other is vice president of a corporation that covers 2 states and is doing great. He purchases his first beautiful rental home while still a teenager. So, they didn’t need college.
College used to be a lot better than it is now.
They can’t devalue college fast enough.
