As always, Joe, you are right on top of the hot button issues of the day. This will be interesting to watch, as it plays out. There is a lot more going on here than polar bears and seals. Greenland has strategic value and the core question comes down to who will defend Greenland. I Don’t, even for one moment, believe that Greenland will become a state. Possibly a territory, and even more likely, there will be a defense agreement with some real teeth in it. The US will maintain a greater military presence and life in Greenland probably won’t change all that much.
Denmark’s claim to Greenland is based upon some historical fact, but the question/problem comes down to the defense of the territory. Can Denmark project enough power, on its own to protect Greenland?
Greenland has strategic value, and is said to possess mineral and petroleum wealth, so someone is going to want a piece of the action, and it comes down to who that becomes. There can be equitable solutions, and the native Greenlanders could definitely raise their standard of living, but that probably wouldn’t happen if they end up in the clutches of some interested parties.
I’d be shocked if there were any military confrontation involving Greenland, over the next four years, but unless more is done to defend Greenland, there will be hostile action on the part of nations unfriendly to Western interests, sooner or later, and I’d bet on sooner.
Casinos ain’t the problem Joe.
Better to prepare and make strategic arrangements now, in peacetime. Better to deter a war than to fight one.
It’s called getting ahead of a problem. Unfortunately, getting ahead of problems, whether in business, strategic or political matters, has become unfashionable these days. While some are up in arms, envisioning armed invasions, etc. I doubt that anything of the sort will happen. More likely, there will be negotiations and eventually compromises will be made and a stable arrangement will be put in place.
I have been watching a presidential press conference, and it’s obvious that there is already progress in some of these thorny matters. Nothing happens overnight, but I think that things will happen.
Casinos in Greenland, not a bad idea Collige Joe. Maybe you can get a job there parking snow mobiles or leading polar bear hunts.
