Is My Memory Coming Back?

For what seemed the longest time (including the six weeks in the hospital), I was haunted by the suspicion that, in getting my blog back on track, I was forgetting something that I ought to remember.

If you’ve had chemotherapy, you’ve probably heard of “chemo brain”–the patient’s inability (temporarily!) to remember ordinary things that are regular features of his or her life. Supposedly all those memories come trickling back, bit by bit.

My “Eureka!” moment came last night. “Oh, that’s what I’ve kept forgetting–my critter video. All these days without one!”

So all right, here’s a critter video: a mother tapir and her baby, only ten days old, already trying to drum up some zoomies. When I was a little boy I just loved tapirs, and wished I could’ve had one for a pet. They’re kind of like rhinos with easy tempers and no horns.

And they, like us, are the work of God’s hands.

  1. Even as a child, I saw the wisdom in the saying that “youth is wasted on the young”. That little Tapir sure seemed to be extracting the most out of life.

It’s good to have the critters videos back, but it’s even better to have yiu back. I know that it’s been a true ordeal, but you have progressed a long ways from where you were, just a few weeks ago.

    1. When I consider your situation, I am struck by how many challenges have come upon you in a short period of time. I can only imagine the mental and emotional burden of this, not to mention the effects of chemo brain. But you have moved forward with each step along the way, and made real progress. The steps ahead are formidable, but you have a track record of success behind you.

There’s an old saying that a truck driver doesn’t drive from NYC to LA. Instead, they drive from NYC to Philadelphia, and then from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, then from Pittsburgh to Columbus, then from Columbus to Indianapolis, and so forth. From Columbus westward, I’ve actually driven the path, and know it fairly well. If NYC represents your starting point, you are a lot farther west than Indianapolis. I’ll go out on a limb and declare that you are in Tucumcari, nearly to Albuquerque. You have a ways to go, but you’ve already come most of the way.

    2. I have a rest spell coming, need to recover from all the procedures so far before they do some more. Gotta get my strength back!
