I thought you might enjoy Thomas Sowell’s critique of Disney’s new Snow White, Left-Wing Fat-Head version.
This is about “rewriting cultural norms without public consent.” Right on target, Dr. Sowell.
The video’s eight minutes long, but well worthwhile. It hits the nail on the head–and how!
Thomas Sowell is a national treasure. I have almost all his books, and I read them over and over.
I always enjoy and agree with his commentaries. He is a reasonable, level headed man.
(says erlene)
How are you today, Erlene?
I’ve seen this actress interviewed on several occasions. A walking, talking advertisement for the woke. As Sowell pointed out, “why take the job of you despise the role?” It’s truly senseless.
Movies from long ago will naturally not reflect the thinking of the current time, and indeed, circa 90 years ago, there were things tolerated in the culture that weren’t so good, but, that’s no reason to disrespect works made at that time. There was a lot of good back then, and at the end of it all, Snow White is basically a morality tale about good triumphing over evil, and the dwarves were just a way to have some nameless good guys. The prince saved a life, but he was male, and therefore incapable of doing good, at least in the eyes of the woke.
I don’t see Walt Disney in the saintly terms that some do, but I think he was basically a man of good intent. I doubt that he would be anything but repulsed by what the corporation bearing his name has become. He understood that people would appreciate wholesome entertainment and at the time Snow White was made, it was an amazing accomplishment; an animated feature length film, with lots of brilliant colors, song and a classic story from the Brothers Grimm. While Disney did embellish a bit, he did not seek to “reimagine” the story. Whenever I hear the word reimagine, I shudder and my blood runs cold.
I can’t imagine how the current Disney company can continue to create movies which fail, and remain in business. I’m certain that I’m not the only person who is sufficiently disgusted by the Disney company to not want to do business with them, even for older works. You don’t put food out for a rabid dog, hoping to sustain it.
The weapon of the 21st century is economic pressure. If the current Disney company succeeds in alienating enough of the public, they may well find themselves unable to attract enough business to sustain them as a company.
This is a time of change. As a parallel, business of recorded music has changed drastically over the last 25 years or so, to the point that is all but unrecognizable. The hegemony once enjoyed by large record companies is now a thing of the past, and artists can produce and distribute music without the financial backing of a large record company. The question has become, is there any need for record companies in today’s world?
YouTube has become a major source of entertainment, for many people. While producing high-quality YouTube videos doesn’t involve expense, the production costs are minuscule in comparison with the cost of creating a movie. Much as with the case of recorded music, the ability to make meaningful video presentations, has now come into the reach of average persons. Similar to the question I stated above, one is to wonder whether the big movie Studios are going to remain viable, in the future.
With that in mind, one would think that the heads of these various studios, would have more sense than to attempt to lecture their audience. I recall, in grade school, a certain presentations were transparently, goody, two shoes, and I, nor many of my classmates, took such presentation seriously. we made it sat through such presentations, but during recess, we were all talking about how lame they were. With some of the movies that I hear about, I can’t help, but wonder if the same thing isn’t really happening. People may sit through such a movie, recovering the exorbitant sunk cost of the ticket, to the extent possible. But as they leave the theater, they know that they have been had, and are probably not inclined to come back.
And if what I’ve read over the years is true, if Walt Disney were running Disney today, heads would roll. Maybe even all of them.
He definitely kept it clean, didn’t indulge much in the way of sexual innuendo.
Sowell’s books are great – what a mind for history & culture.
Erlene answers: I am still hanging on, very weak and dizzy, but waiting to see what the Lord will do with me. Still able to read Scripture and pray, and my prayers include you and the group.
I pray for you every night, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who does.
Please get better.
As you remain in my prayers.
