This is one of those hymns that makes Christ’s enemies gnash their teeth–Christ Shall Have Dominion. If it sounds like Onward, Christian Soldiers, that’s because Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame) wrote the melody that’s used for both.
May Christ’s dominion come today.
“ElderMike” inspired me with a comment late last night–yes, let’s celebrate Christ’s victory! Especially now–we especially need to do it now.

I wish I had friends to sing hymns with. Wherever two or three are gathered in Christ’s name… He’s there, too.
The first time I posted the hymn, Christ Shall Have Dominion, someone objected. He didn’t want Christ to have dominion.
He didn’t say whom he’d rather had it.
So, okay–if it’s not to be the Lord Jesus Christ, then who do you want to rule the earth? A political party full of orcs? A consortium of thieves?
Ooh-ooh, I know! Genius saints guided by Science! They have them in Canada or someplace.
Fairies would be okay, too. A world ruled by fairies. That’d be cool.

When he wasn’t writing operettas with W.S. Gilbert, Arthur Sullivan wrote hymns. Christ Shall Have Dominion came out in 1871. The first time I posted it here, someone objected strenuously. I guess he wanted someone else to have dominion. God defend us.

Sometimes people object when I post this hymn. They would rather someone other than Christ had dominion. Whom that might be, they don’t say. But the right to it belongs to Jesus Christ alone.

And you’d better pray it’s Christ that has it: because He only has the right to it. I remember the first time I posted this hymn: someone objected to the whole idea. To this day I wonder whom he would prefer to have dominion. But it doesn’t bear thinking of.
