‘Create in Me a Clean Heart’

Create in Me a Clean Heart is taken from Psalm 51–the Psalm David wrote when he repented the terrible sin he had committed in taking Uriah the Hittite’s wife, Bathsheba, and arranging for Uriah to be killed in battle: adultery plus murder. This is what the human heart does when it rebels against its Maker and Redeemer. And only God by Jesus Christ can cleanse it.

Performed by some of the kids at Fountainview Academy.

‘From Every Stormy Wind’ (‘The Mercy Seat’)

This hymn has been around since 1828, and yet I never heard of it until this morning, when Susan suggested it. I discover a lot of people love this hymn, which is also known as The Mercy Seat. This a cappella performance is by the Mennonite Hour Singers.

‘All Hail the Power of Jesus Name’

To me this will always be the hymn for a bright and sunny morning–All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name. May the name of Jesus Christ Our Lord blaze forth this day in glory, He whose right it is to rule Creation. May that day come soon when every knee shall bow to Him, and every tongue confess Him Lord. The sooner, the better, O God! Amen.

‘To God Be the Glory’ (Embrace the Wildness)

We do like to do things decently and in good order, as St. Paul admonished the church in Corinth. But at the same time, our Christian faith contains a note of wildness which shouldn’t be ignored. Our faith often runs head-on against the wisdom of this world. It’s supposed to do that!

So I like this wild rendition of To God Be the Glory by the choir of The Church of God, with the congregation also putting their hearts into it.

And really–if you can’t get worked up about God Almighty… well, you probably ought to think about that.

Encore, ‘Yield Not to Temptation’

Yield Not to Temptation, written by Horatio Palmer in 1868–don’t you love those 19th century hymns?–was always a Sunday school favorite in my old church. This rendition is by the choir at The Church of God.

By Request, ‘Go Ye Now in Peace’

Susan asked for this one–Go Ye Now in Peace, performed by the Rochester College A Cappella Chorus–so it’s the hymn to start the day.

To those of you who are new to this blog, we take hymn requests. If there’s a hymn you’d like to see posted here, just let us know. It’s open to all.

‘Send the Light’

I never heard this hymn before. Isn’t it beautiful? Send the Light, sung by the Altar of Praise Men’s Chorale, a good old hymn from 1890–make a joyful noise unto the Lord.

‘Hail Him the King of Glory’

I have to take Robbie in for her checkup this morning, but first a hymn–Hail Him the King of Glory, performed by the kids at Fountainview Academy in British Columbia: with God’s own stage settings in the background.

Ah! ‘Light of the World’

Okay, there’s nobody out there cursing or fighting just now, the cats are fed, and now let our souls be lit by Jesus Christ Our Lord, the Light of the World–the true Light that lighteth every man that cometh into the world (John 1:9). This is the Light the darkness can’t put out–not even the darkness of this evil age.

Written by Charles Wesley, performed by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.

Beautiful! ‘Blessed Assurance’

This classic Fanny Crosby hymn began asserting itself in my mind last night–Blessed Assurance, here performed by Nathan and Lyle and assorted family members in Denton County, Texas. That young girl with the flute has got some voice to go with it! Shows you what you can do, when you set your mind to praise the Lord at home.
