Encore, ‘Leaning on the Everlasting Arms’

I’m sure I’ve posted this before, but it’s a great hymn with which to start the day–Leaning on the Everlasting Arms. This rousing, blow-the-doors-off rendition is by the choir and congregation of The Church of God.

‘Holy, Holy, Holy’ (Hillsong United)

I’m running out of versions of this hymn to post here. I’d like it best being blasted out of a mighty organ and being sung, for all they’re worth, by about a thousand people. But maybe some of you will enjoy this gentler Hillsong rendition.  But whatever arrangement we prefer, it’s the message that counts–Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty!

Sing it loud. Sing it loud.

Today’s Hymn, ‘All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name’

How I longed for this hymn this morning! I don’t know why: I just had to hear it–All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name. The lyrics were published in 1770, and thre are several melodies that go with it. This is the one I grew up with.

I can never hear this hymn without remembering an outdoor chapel service one Sunday morning at the Y camp, in the summer, under a perfect azure sky, overlooking a quiltwork of cultivated fields and rolling, wooded hills. This is what they sang: and I’m willing to bet God heard it.

Immortal, Invisible God Only Wise’

This is from a memorial service at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, England, for victims of the 9/11 Islamic terrorist attacks on America.

We turn to God in times of trouble.

Sunday School Favorite: ‘Jesus Calls Us’

All we’ve got here is the piano, plus readable lyrics–just like we had in Sunday school. This is Jesus Calls Us, first published in 1852: and you might want to sing it yourself.

By Request, ‘Have Thine Own Way, Lord’

Erlene says our prayers are already working for her, which we’re all very glad to hear, and has requested this hymn, Have Thine Own Way, Lord, sung by Jim Reeves. And we’re very glad to post it.

Remember, everybody, especially if you’re new to this blog–we take both hymn requests and prayer requests, and happy to do it.

‘Safe in the Arms of Jesus’

One day in 1868, Fanny Crosby recalled, her friend, Dr. Doan, dropped in for a visit and told her he had to catch a train in 40 minutes. He had a melody, he said: could she, in under 40 minutes, write a hymn to it? (The story is reported by CyberHymnal.)

She could and she did (in about 20 minutes); and you can hear that hymn today, sung by the Altar of Praise Chorale.

Chorus: ‘Glory to God’

From Handel’s Messiah, sung by the Taverner Choir and Players, the chorus, Glory to God… Think of the high artistic gifts that went into this, given by God to the composer, singers, instrumentalists, conductor, church architects–and all offered back, to the glory of God.

Today’s Hymn, ‘Revive Us Again’

This is the hymn that’s with me this morning. The deer seem to like it when I whistle it to them: Revive Us Again (music from 1815, words from 1863), sung by the congregation at the Bible Believers Fellowship in Ohio. In case you were thinking that the popular song from the Depression Era, Hallelujah I’m a Bum,  sung to the same melody, came first–no, the hymn came first.

Today’s Hymn, ‘Blessed Assurance’

Fanny Crosby wrote more than 8,000 hymns during her lifetime. This is one of them: Blessed Assurance, from 1873, sung here by Spring Harvest.

Father in Heaven, we thank you for the life and works of Fanny Crosby. Though she was blind, how many did she help to see!
