Somehow I always associated this hymn with the Salvation Army. Actually, it was written in 1878 by Elisha Hoffman–who also wrote Leaning on the Everlasting Arms… not to mention another 2,000 or so.
This lovely old hymn from 1887, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms, I first heard in a movie, Night of the Hunter. That wasn’t the most wholesome context for it, but the hymn stayed with me. Here we have it performed by Nathan and Lyle, autoharp and guitar, in a living room in Denton County, Texas. Plus lyrics and chords, if you want to sing or strum along.
How I love this hymn! Leaning on the Everlasting Arms. I’d never heard it, until I heard Lillian Gish and Robert Mitchum sing it in Night of the Hunter. I’d sing it myself, only it chokes me up. So here let it be sung outdoors in British Columbia by the students at Fountainview Academy.

There are so many ways to perform this hymn, and here’s another one–Leaning on the Everlasting Arms, presented by the Gaithers, with Buddy Greene on the harmonica. I play hymns on my harmonica, but it doesn’t sound like this. Anyway, there are a lot of ways to make a joyful noise unto the Lord.
