‘A Mighty Fortress’ (with Lyrics)

I could hardly believe my ears, the first time I heard this, Martin Luther’s hymn, being played on the bells of St. Francis’ Church, across the street from me: A Mighty Fortress is Our God. Pope Benedict XVI had some good ideas, and allowing this hymn to be played was one of them.

Your Favorite Hymns continues–please feel free to add to the list.

By Request, ‘From Heaven Above to Earth I Come’

Requested by Erlene, this is an old one, written by Martin Luther in 1534. The melody came in 1539: Luther is believed to have composed that, too.

Sung by the Lutheran Quartet, From Heaven Above to Earth I Come. Unexpectedly beautiful.

By Request, ‘A Mighty Fortress’

Whew! Back from an exhausting trip to Wegman’s: great store, but so noisy, so crowded!

Erlene thought we might enjoy this classic hymn by Martin Luther, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. We need that fortress. And we look forward to that day when the angelic host comes marching out of it.

‘A Mighty Fortress’

Sung with gusto by the Maranatha Promise Band–A Mighty Fortress is Our God, by Martin Luther. God knows we have need of a fortress! “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46).

‘A Mighty Fortress Is Our God’

“God is our refuge and strength…” Psalm 46. Martin Luther, inspired by the Psalm, wrote A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. I think you’ll agree we need daily access to that refuge.

Sung here by the Roger Wagner Chorale–turn up the volume.

By Request, ‘A Mighty Fortress’

I still don’t know who’s singing this, but man, it’s great! Requested by Joshua, A Mighty Fortress is Our God, by Martin Luther–complete with lyrics, too, so you can sing along.

This hymn is excellent medicine for those times when we feel down-hearted.

By Request, ‘Savior of the Nations, Come’

We have two hymn requests this evening, and blamed if I don’t use ’em both! This one comes from the White Rabbit.

Savior of the Nations, Come goes back a long long way. Original text by Ambrose of Milan, who died in 397; and the German text, upon which our text is based, by Martin Luther.

Our hope and faith in Jesus Christ will outlast the centuries.

By Request, ‘A Mighty Fortress’

It was 500 years ago today that Martin Luther changed the world by starting the still-ongoing reformation of the Church. He also wrote A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, requested this morning by “thewhiterabbit” to honor Reformation Day.

Turn up the volume! I don’t know who’s singing, but they’re awfully good.

Pilgrims’ Hymn and Bach Chorale

With things falling apart pretty nearly everywhere you look, it’s important to remember that God is forever, and Christ’s Kingdom an everlasting kingdom.

This is the Luther College Nordic choir performing the Pilgrims’ Hymn and Bach Chorale in the church wherein Martin Luther is buried, in Wittenburg, Germany. Let the music wash over you. Look around the ancient church.

The things of God do last, being spiritual, unshakeable, eternal.

‘A Mighty Fortress Is Our God’

Martin Luther’s hymn, A Mighty Fortress is Our God, contains lyrics we would all do well to heed. We need to stop giving Satan more than his due, and carrying on like we think the devil is the god of this world and none can stand against him. God has already numbered Satan’s days, and stoked up the fire good and hot for him.

If you’re Catholic, you can still join in: because in 2009 Pope Benedict said “Luther was right” in translating St. Paul’s teaching to read that we are saved by faith alone, and not by any works of ours. Go ahead, you could look it up.
