Here a TV show, created purely for light entertainment, showed its audience how easily the news media, aiding and abetting feckless and irresponsible government, can turn a hoax into “news” and a real event into a shaggy dog story. “I know it’s true! I seen it on the news!”
We do need to outgrow that.
