Having two deaths in my family virtually back-to-back has made hymns more precious to me. I feel them more acutely. But I’ve always loved this one, This Is My Father’s World. “Though the wrong seem oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.”

This sweet old classic hymn is for everyone this morning, but especially for Phoebe, Linda, and Erlene, our sisters and fellowsoldiers: This Is My Father’s World, sung here by Fernando Ortega. Plus lovely pictures of God’s handiwork. Reminds me of the last snowy night we had, when we looked out the window to see two deer looking in.
This Is My Father’s World is one of my favorite hymns. It never fails to move me. I very much wanted it performed by a lady in a print dress on the Sunday school piano, but it seemed every version I looked at on youtube today was being performed by someone who thought he or she was auditioning for a Las Vegas floor show. Finally I found Daniel Choo, here, with his guitar. Thank you, Daniel–very nice.
How I love this hymn! This Is My Father’s World, written by Maltbie Babcock in 1901, from his farm in upstate New York, and set to a traditional English melody in 1915 (according to Cyberhymnal–I don’t actually know all this stuff!), and here performed by the kids at Fountainview Academy, British Columbia. It really goes well with canoeing smoothly over glassy water…
I love this hymn, This Is My Father’s World, and I love this no-frills performance of it by the Joslin Grove Choral Society. Words to hold on to: “Yet though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.” Not since World War II has the wrong been as strong as it is now. But it will never be as strong as God.
Here the sun is shining brightly on a smooth blanket of pure white snow, under an azure sky streaked with cottony clouds: this is my Father’s world.
I’ve been posting a hymn every day now for a year–or is it nearer two years?–and it seems to be that I’m more moved by them, emotionally, instead of less I find the sky and the snow more moving, too, along with everything else out there: my Father’s handiwork, all of which speaks softly, “God is nigh.” And I know they speak truth: I can feel it.
You feel it, too, don’t you? And if only we knew how to express it!
Before I get back to work reporting news that sticks in my craw, This Is My Father’s World: I can’t identify the singers, but it’s a nice performance of a wonderful hymn.
This is my Father’s world: O let me ne’er forget
That tho’ the wrong seem oft so strong
God is the ruler yet.
A thought wherewith to gird one’s loins…
Words to live by, included in this hymn: This is my Father’s world–O let me ne’er forget/ That tho’ the wrong seems oft so strong,/ God is the ruler yet.
Lovely performance by the students at Fountainview Academy, British Columbia. Gee, it’s been a while since Patty and I went canoeing…
This wonderful, lovely, traditional hymn–here sung by Alli Rogers–contains a thought for the day. Or any day, for that matter:
This is my Father’s world./ O let me ne’er forget/ that though the wrong seems oft so strong,/ God is the ruler yet.
He does let the wicked grow very tall and proud before He cuts them down.
Thank you, Laura, for suggesting this lovely old hymn, one of my all-time favorites, to wash out the bad taste left by the news today. Just beautiful!
This is My Father’s World–with lyrics so you can all sing along.
