By Request, ‘It Is Well With My Soul’

Horatio Spafford wrote these lyrics after losing his wealth in the Chicago Fire and losing his children at sea. His point was: his soul is kept secure by Jesus Christ; and in that he can trust.

Requested by Erlene–It Is Well With My Soul, sung by Audrey Assad.

  1. While things are not going smoothly in flesh, the world and all around us here on earth, we can make sure we keep our souls in tune with our Lord, and that makes it worthwhile.

  2. It is such a heart-rending story, how the Spafford’s lost their four young daughters in the icy waters of the North Atlantic on that day in 1873, only his wife, Anna was spotted and plucked from the sea. Anna sent a poignant message to her anxious husband after her ship sunk: “Saved alone.” The Spaffords never lost their abiding faith in God. This hymn was written about two years after the shipwreck.

This is one of my favorite hymns.
