Some of us have heard “lake guns” and some of us haven’t. You might not know you’ve heard them: they might easily be mistaken for thunder or something else.
You don’t hear them at every body of water and you don’t hear them all the time. We simply don’t know what makes these sounds. Patty and I used to hear them occasionally on Barnegat Bay–always on extremely calm days.
They do sound like cannon-fire, sometimes.
No, I don’t think I’ve ever heard them; of course, I haven’t spent much time around water.
It’s a world-wide thing, though.
I believe I had heard this, back when I lived in a place where there were lakes. No idea what it could be.
No one else knows, either.
That’s a relief. I thought it might have been digestive. 🙂
I don’t recall ever hearing about this. Buts it’s akin to another mystery in the realm of sound, the Hum. It’s a low-frequency hum, almost a vibration, just on the threshold of human hearing. It’s not particularly loud. In fact, you might not have even noticed it yet – but once you do, you can’t stop hearing it. It sounds like a truck, idling on the street in front your house.

There’s a video of a minor league baseball game that was interrupted by a weird and unexplained sound of that general nature. It used to be on YouTube. Let me see if I can find it.
