Gee, with all the pets I’ve had, I never had baby hamsters. Unknowable mentioned them and sparked my interest.
Here are three babies learning how to enjoy their hamster wheel. So much nicer than twanging the bars of the hamster cage all through the middle of the night. That’s what my hamster did. Much better to use an aquarium with plastic sides.
(It could be worse. I had a quartet of tree frogs that, um, “sang” all night, loudly. My housemates didn’t appreciate it. The frogs were returned to the wild.)
To the best of my understanding, Hamster is the English corruption of hamstern, which is basically German for hoarder. Hamsters hoard food, that’s what they do. I remember seeing a hamster with a freshly cleaned cage, with no burrow, so the hamster slept atop its food bowl. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matt 6:21 🙂
I remember seeing a baby hamster, its eyes not even opened yet, marching across the cage with his cheeks absolutely stuffed to the max. They are endearing little creatures with a lot of heart and very thrifty ways. 🙂
