Baby Hamsters (Short but Sweet)

Gee, with all the pets I’ve had, I never had baby hamsters. Unknowable mentioned them and sparked my interest.

Here are three babies learning how to enjoy their hamster wheel. So much nicer than twanging the bars of the hamster cage all through the middle of the night. That’s what my hamster did. Much better to use an aquarium with plastic sides.

(It could be worse. I had a quartet of tree frogs that, um, “sang” all night, loudly. My housemates didn’t appreciate it. The frogs were returned to the wild.)

Two Silly Rats

Once upon a time my sister gave us a pair of white rats for Christmas. They were tame, affectionate, playful… with us humans.

But when it was bed-time and we turned out the lights, we would hear, coming from the rats’ aquarium, thump-thump-thump-thud-SQUEEEEEAK! And I’d turn the light back on, only to find the two little characters innocently sitting in the cedar shavings… as if to say “Fight? What fight? Who’s fightin’? We don’t know what you’re talking about, boss.”

At least they never hurt each other.

I Miss My Pets

Yes, they like to ride around on your shoulder.

This is the first time since I was six years old or so that we haven’t had any pets to share our life.

Looking back on it: cats, dog, turtle (we used to take him on vacation with us)… a wide assortment of lizards large and small (for 17 years I had my iguana: he thought he was a mammal)… rats, mice, various fish… Did I miss anybody?

Now our health is shot and we can’t take care of pets. How I miss them! Even the aquarium with crickets, merrily chirping away on New Year’s Day, with the snow coming down outside.

Maybe someday we can return to normalcy.

Pets with the Munchies

I have to say my favorite here is the parrot who decides to feed the dog. Here are a whole raft of assorted animals–dogs, cats, parrots, even chipmunks and a tortoise–dealing with the crave, managing the munchies, with varying degrees of finesse. I am happy to say our cats never try to grab food off our plates.
