‘One Wide River to Cross’

I’m sure I don’t know why, but I find a degree of comfort in this song. I’m looking at a wide river now. Will the Lord carry me across? And what will I find on the other side?

Father, if I ever needed faith, I need it now. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. That is a lovely, simple song of faith.

    I don’t know what your immediate prospects are, but I am very certain of your eternal prospects, which are secure. Keep your faith in our Maker, and in Jesus as our Redeemer and you are in the safest place possible.

  2. “Will the Lord carry me across? And what will I find on the other side? Father, if I ever needed faith, I need it now.”

    Lee, everyone, at the end, has one wide river to cross. One day, will be their last day, and then their eternity will begin. This is a bit long (sorry).

    What must I do to be saved? Many ask. I have put together, from scripture, the requirements and elements needed for salvation. Belief in the gospel, faith, and confession of sin. Here are most of those verses. If you have done these things, have faith and believe these verses, your future is safe in the arms of Jesus, and He will carry you across.

    As Jesus taught in Caesarea Philippi, He asked his disciples two questions, first “Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? Their answer: Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some Elias: and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.” Then Jesus asked, “But whom say ye that I am” (Matt.16:13-19)? Simon Peter responded: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered Peter, “Blessed art thou, for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

    What was the rock Christ was going to build His Church upon? Peters’ declaration was Jesus was the Son of God, Shiloh, referenced by Jacob, the promised One, the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed one.

    God sent Philip to preach the gospel to an official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. He was sitting in his chariot when Philip drew near and heard him reading from Isaiah chapter 53. Philip began a dialog when he asked him; “Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me?” The eunuch wasn’t sure who the prophet was speaking about, so Philip began at that Scripture and preached unto him Jesus. The account continues; “And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God” (Acts 8:37).

    What is the declaration of saving faith Apostle Paul wrote concerning Christ? “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Rom. 10:9).

    What did Paul and Silas tell the Philippi jailer to do to be saved?

    “The jailer, having witnessed these events, was terrified and fell at the feet of Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out of the prison and asked; Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house” (Acts16:30-31).

    On the day of Pentecost, what was the saving message Peter preached? They were all Jews that had gathered that day. They knew the Scriptures, of which Peter spoke, and believed them. Great guilt and condemnation filled their hearts, when they realized the truth spoken by Peter. Immediately, after hearing Peters words, … “they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” (Acts 2:37-38).

    “He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son” (II John 7-9). Moreover, “Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God” (I John 4:15).

    “And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (I John 2:1).

    “That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment” (I John 3:23).

    “Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God” (I John 4:15).

    “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God … Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God” (I John 5:1, 5).

    Another confession of saving faith was from one malefactor, also nailed to a cross. He then turned to the Lord and stated: “Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom” (Luke 23:42). Jesus’ response to his simple confession of saving faith was short and to the point: “Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43).

    “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven” (Matt. 10:32).

    “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent ye, and believe the gospel (Mark 1:15).

    “Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God” (Luke 12:8).

    “Jesus answered and said unto them; This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent” (John 6:29).

    “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life; he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? She saith unto him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world “(John 11:25-27).

    “But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead” (Rom. 4:24).

    “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” (I Cor. 15:1-5).

    “And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil. 2:11).

    “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear” (Heb. 11:3).

    “But without faith it is impossible to pleas him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Heb. 11:6).

    “Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God” (I Peter 1:21).

    “Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God” (I John 4:15).

    “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God” (I John 5:13).

    “For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist” (II John 7).

    In the verses listed, what are the basic, essential, and necessary requirements we must confess, to have a saving faith in Christ?

    • We must confess that Jesus is the Son of God;
    • We must believe in God, that raised Christ from the dead, and gave him glory;
    • We must confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father;
    • We must believe with all our heart, Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God which should come into the world;
    • We must confess Christ before men;
    • We must believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
    • We must believe the gospel, which is the good news of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus;
    • We must believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.
