Yes, You Can Ride a Rhino

Jean-Pierre Hallet was a former Belgian colonial official who wrote a couple of corking best-sellers (Congo Kitabu, Pygmy Kitabu) back in the 1960s.. He was a huge man:I met him once, when he gave a lecture at Rutgers.

Hallet’s theme was that any animal, if it receives enough love and kindness, could be trained to friendship with a human. To prove it, he tamed a rhinoceros. He used to ride it around.

There really is so much that love can do! Give it a chance.

  1. Considering some of the videos I’ve watched of people living closely with Mountain Lions and even a Leopard, I tend to agree. From that picture, he must’ve been a very big person.

  2. Love covers a multitude of sins. This is a good verse to contemplate when having difficulties with loved ones who disappoint you or even hurt you (usually done by words proceeding through a fire caused by the tongue).

  3. The Internet has opened up many opportunities to see amazing friendships between animals and humans, and between animals who are very different from each other. I think it is God’s way of showing us how much love can do in this time of ours when so many hearts have grown cold.

    1. You should’ve known my iguana. He was sure he was a mammal. I think his many human friends had a lot to do with that.

    2. A great thought. There’s no other word except love to describe the bond that can form between humans and animals. Even as a write, a nice little cat is curled up next to me, having a nap, completely confident that she’ll be treated with kindness. Our pets become family.
