Since this article was initially published, 346 people were killed in two separate 737 Max 8 crashes, when the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System responded to faulty data from failed angle of attack sensors. Do you sense a pattern here?
In the computer world GIGO is the abbreviation for Garbage In, Garbage Out. While computers can perform logical processes accurately and quickly, their conclusions are no better than the data they receive, and faulty sensors, etc. can really gum up the works.
Beyond that, computers, while capable of logic, have no sense, whatsoever. If you developed a computer program to help people control their calorie intake, a computer would not realize that 2000 calories per day of candy bars is not a healthy diet.
A while back, a law office decided to use AI to prepare a case, and it prepared an air-tight argument citing precedents and case law that didn’t actually exist. Computers have no sense, so a computer whose task is to generate information is as pleased to generate false information as it is to generate information based upon fact. The computer doesn’t “care”, because computers can’t care about anything. While even a small child has an innate sense of justice, computers have no sense of anything. They don’t feel bad if they cause a death, because they do not feel anything.
AI is entirely artificial, and in no way, whatsoever, intelligent.
Well said! If only people would not jump into something with both feet, just because it is the newest thing. New is not always good.

One problem in aviation is that the automated warning and notification systems in newer aircraft will pop up so many checklists that pilots may have to spend considerable amounts of time plowing through them, when the priority should be to find a safe place to land, and sort matters out from the safety of the ground. Yes, automation and flight control computers have contributed greatly to air safety, but sometimes the tail begins to wag the dog, and that is never good. Even my car throws alerts is the car in the next lane over brakes suddenly. At the very moment when my attention needs to be on the road, there are buzzers and warning lights attempting to distract me. I don’t allow that to happen, but I could do without this.
My car is so old that it does not have any of the nagging speakers or warning buzzers or whatever. My brother in law just got a new truck after having the same truck for 20 years. A nice simple plain pickup. He hates the new one because it has so many bells and whistles (plus a speaker that tell him when he is driving “erratically”. I would lose my mind.
I bought a 2025 vehicle, and it’s much the same. Before buying that, I had a rental for a couple of weeks that would urge me to take a rest every time I strayed from the center of the lane. Well, when you are passing oversized loads on the Interstate, you pretty much have to get to the side of the lane and this pointless message block almost everything else on the instrument panel.
My friend also has a rather new car and it drives her crazy when a tire’s pressure gets low the message blocks out all the other information you need to see on your dashboard. I think it is how they justify the ridiculous prices they are charging. Lots of unnecessary bells and whistles.
Some of that can be shut off, but it varies from car to car.
It’s very annoying.
