Hymn, ‘Wonderful Story of Love’

All right, I’ve had enough bad news today. Let’s hear some good news instead.

Wonderful Story of Love, performed by Nathan Sarvis on the autoharp and Lyle Howard on guitar, with family members singing backup–it ain’t the New York Philharmonic, but they do all right by this 1892 hymn.

Rock of Ages, written in 1775, performed here by a Mennonite choir–if you really listen to the lyrics, it will move you. I promise.

“Wash me, Savior, or I die…”

Did William Jennings Bryan really say, “I’m more interested in the Rock of Ages than the age of rocks”? If he did, God bless him for it!

Hymn, ‘The Old Rugged Cross’

By reader request, The Old Rugged Cross, sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford.

This hymn always used to make me cry when we sang it in Sunday school. It’s still a little hard for me. But I firmly believe that we should not withhold the tribute of tears from those we love–and should we not love our Savior?

No one has requested a hymn for today–those who haven’t done so yet, come on, join in!–and I need a hymn. It’s only just ten o’clock and I’ve already heard enough bad news to last me all day.

Hymn, ‘Love Lifted Me’

This is another hymn I never heard before, Love Lifted Me. Nate has his autoharp, Lyle has a ukelele instead of his guitar, and some of their friends showed up with other instruments–to make a joyful noise unto the Lord.

I love this melody, which I had only known as Rejoice and Be Glad. Now I wouldn’t be surprised if there were other sets of lyrics to it, too.

Nathan and Lyle with autoharp and guitar bring it to life: a wonderful performance. You can’t go wrong starting your day with a hymn like this one.

Hymn, ‘This Is My Father’s World’

No one has requested any hymns yet today, so let me go one of my own favorites, This Is My Father’s World–here performed as a “piano meditation” by Rick Betts, with satellite photos of our world, the work of God’s hands.

This verse, in particular, remember:

This is my Father’s world, and let me ne’er forget

That though the wrong seems oft so strong,

God is the ruler yet.

Hymn, ‘Down at the Cross’

Here are Nathan and Lyle, with their autoharp and guitar, performing Down at the Cross. The video is also a music tutorial, so be patient with Nathan’s introduction.

I love the sound these guys make. It’s so homey, so ordinary. And for the most part I’ve never heard these hymns before.

Why am I posting so many of them?

Because this is an evil age, evil in ways I never thought to see in all my days, and getting worse by the day. We need our Shepherd.

Hear us, O Lord: These things are done without our consent and against our will.

Hymn, ‘Yield Not to Temptation’

There are a lot of nice versions of this good old hymn, but I liked best this simple piano rendition–with the lyrics given, so you can sing along. Sing louder! For our God will hear us.
