By Request, ‘Spirit of God Descend Upon My Heart’

I love the way the Joslin Choral Society sings a hymn, so when Susan asked for this one–Spirit of God Descend Upon My Heart, a good old 19th century classic–this was the version I chose. I didn’t recognize the hymn by its title when Susan first mentioned it, but as soon as I heard the first few bars, I knew it for an old friend, after all.

By Request, ‘Onward, Christian Soldiers’

There were supposed to be lyrics displayed with this, but somehow they got left out. But it is the Joslin Grove Choral Society, and they’re always worth hearing.

Requested by SlimJim, Onward, Christian Soldiers.

Never surrender.

By Request, ‘Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us’

Erlene requested this one–Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us, here sung by the Joslin Grove Choir. I remember my mother and my grandma humming this as they went about their housework. Somehow in those days people were immersed in Christianity: not self-consciously, but as fish are immersed in water. That was our world.

And it still is: God grant it always will be.

‘Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise’

In the absence of a reader request, I go with my favorite hymns–usually with whatever hymn happens to pop into my head. This is one of my favorites–Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise, sung by the Joslin Grove Choral Society. Sing along! We’ve got lyrics.

‘This Is My Father’s World’ (Joslin Grove Choral Society)

I love this hymn, This Is My Father’s World, and I love this no-frills performance of it by the Joslin Grove Choral Society. Words to hold on to: “Yet though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.” Not since World War II has the wrong been as strong as it is now. But it will never be as strong as God.

‘Christ the Lord Is Risen Today’

For me, this is the Easter hymn: Christ the Lord is Risen Today. Words by Charles Wesley. Sung by the Joslin Grove Choral Society. Inspiration by the Holy Spirit.

He is risen, and He shall raise us, too. That is all we need to know.

Today’s Hymn, ‘Amazing Grace’

Do we know a more beautiful, a more well-loved hymn than this? First published in 1779, Amazing Grace is today one of the world’s most popular hymns–and it’s no mystery why, is it? Is there any message we need and love to hear more than the message of God’s abounding grace?

Thanks to the Joslin Grove Choral Society for this rendition of the hymn.

‘Christ the Lord is Risen Today’

When the heathen rage, and people imagine vain things…

When the wicked and ungodly prosper, and the future looks bleak…

When our strength lessens, and our faith breaks out in questions–

Sing louder!

And this would be a good thing to sing: Christ the Lord is Risen Today. We thank the Joslin Grove Choral Society for this beautiful rendition.

Hymn, ‘Wonderful Words of Life’

This was one of my favorites from Sunday School–Wonderful Words of Life, here sung by the Joslin Grove Choral Society. God knows we never needed more to hear His word than we need it now.

Yes, I know I’ve been repeating myself lately, in my posting of hymns. But hey, readers, the Hymn Shop is always open and everything in it is free! If there’s a hymn you want to see posted, just leave a comment anywhere on this  blog, stating your request, and we’ll do the rest.

By Request, ‘Wonderful Words of Life’

I can’t imagine how I could have overlooked this hymn, so far: so thank you, Linda, for requesting it–Wonderful Words of Life, sung by the Joslin Grove Choral Society. Ah, this brings me back to Sunday school! Piano and all.
