Encore: ‘The Sussex Carol’

*Sigh… I want a longer Christmas! I want my family back. I crave some sign that 2024 will be better than this year has been.

I had a yen to hear it again: The Sussex Carol, performed by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.

Look at that grey sky out there. I wonder if it’ll finally snow.

By Request (Sort Of), ‘The Sussex Carol’

It was “Thewhiterabbit’s” birthday the other day, and he expressed a desire to hear more Christmas carols sung by Maddy Prior. Well, Dave, here’s one of the best!

The Sussex Carol, performed the old-fashioned way by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.

And hey, everybody! None of the carols you’ve requested has broken the 30-view barrier (that’d be 30 views on the day it was posted). We need our Christmas spirit! Personally, I don’t think I’ve ever needed it more. Let’s keep sharing carols, shall we?

‘The Sussex Carol’ (Encore)

Just because the carol contest is over doesn’t mean we can’t have any more Christmas music. Don’t be shy–share your favorites.

This is one of mine–The Sussex Carol by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.

‘The Sussex Carol’

No, I’m not trying to win my own contest. I just love this carol and want to share it with you–The Sussex Carol, performed the old-fashioned way by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.

Come on, now–let’s get into the spirit.

Encore, ‘The Sussex Carol’

Well, no one has requested any hymns this morning, though we should still be in the mood for Christmas carols; so I thought I’d like to encore one of my favorites–The Sussex Carol, first published in the 17th century for surely older than that, performed the old-fashioned way by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.

We’re not really done with carols, are we? Christmas 2021 is a very long way away…

‘Sussex Carol’

This is another one of my favorite carols. I know I’m supposed to be posting your favorites, but no one has requested any for today. Some way to run a carol contest.

Anyway, this is The Sussex Carol, arranged by Elaine Hagenberg–beautiful enough to bring a tear to my eye. I know it’ll stick with me all day.

If we ever needed Christmas, we need it this year. If we ever needed the Lordship of Christ, we need it now.

‘The Sussex Carol’

I have no idea who’s singing this gorgeous old carol. All I know is, this arrangement is by Elaine Hagenberg. I first heard The Sussex Carol as just a little snippet in the background in the George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol. I never forgot it, and I was so pleased when I finally heard the whole thing.

(For Openers) The Sussex Carol

No Christmas hymns submitted for the contest this morning–where did everybody go? So let me see if I can start the ball rolling with this, one of my favorites: The Sussex Carol, performed by Maddy Priot and the Carnival Band, the old-fashioned way. Is that somebody playing a sackbut in the background? Wow!

Beautiful! ‘The Sussex Carol’

Here’s another one that stirs my soul: The Sussex Carol, performed the old-fashioned way by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band. I love you, O Lord! And I love the Christmas season.

Father in Heaven, we are indeed as sheep that have gone far astray: but you have sent us the Shepherd, the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep–

–And takes it up again!

From Me to You, ‘The Sussex Carol’

I have known this melody for years–a few bars of it introduce A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott–without knowing the lyrics, or even knowing it’s a traditional English Christmas carol, first published in the 17th century. Imagine my delight when I stumbled over it today on youtube.

So here it is, The Sussex Carol, also known as On Christmas Night, performed by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band in true 17th century style. I hope you love it as much as I do.
