‘Yield Not to Temptation’

An old Sunday school favorite, Yield Not to Temptation–written by Horatio Palmer in 1868, performed here by the choir and congregation at The Church of God. It’s their usual high-spirited rendition.

‘Yield Not to Temptation’

This hymn, Yield Not to Temptation, was always a Sunday school standby. Nathan on the Mandolin, Lyle on guitar–from Denton County, Texas. And if you’ve got a guitar handy, they give you the chords so you can strum along.

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord.

Encore, ‘Yield Not to Temptation’

Yield Not to Temptation, written by Horatio Palmer in 1868–don’t you love those 19th century hymns?–was always a Sunday school favorite in my old church. This rendition is by the choir at The Church of God.

‘Yield Not to Temptation’

This was another Sunday school favorite–Yield Not to Temptation, written by Horatio Palmer in 1868 and still going strong: performed here by Nathan and Lyle from Denton County, Texas.

P.S.–Our prayers go up for those in the path of Hurricane Irma: we are the sheep of your pasture, Lord, and we need our Shepherd. Some of you in this little blog family are down there in Florida. Please keep in touch, if you can. The rest of us will be praying for you.

Sunday School Favorite: ‘Yield Not to Temptation’

From 1868, by Horatio Palmer, comes this classic hymn, Yield Not to Temptation–sung by the Johnson children, Jeffreay, Kayla, Ryan, and Jennifer.

If you never catch yourself humming or whistling this hymn, you never went to Sunday school.

Sing Along! ‘Yield Not to Temptation’

Another beloved Sunday school standby, here performed by Nathan and Lyle in Texas, on mandolin and guitar.

Horatio Palmer wrote this song, words and music, in 1868–wrote it pretty fast, too. Here’s how he recalled it (source, Cyberhymnal): “I was at work on the dry subject of Theory when the complete idea flashed before me… I hurriedly penned both words and music as fast as I could write them…”

That is so cool when that happens! A gift from God, and no mistake about it.

Hymn, ‘Yield Not to Temptation’

Yield Not to Temptation is one of my favorite hymns. I heard it in an old movie the other day and it’s still with me. Here it’s sung a capella by the choir at the Church of God. This bunch can really sing!

As usual the youtube page for this hymn featured an f-bomb laden comment by some atheist. I guess we ought to pray for these lost souls who reject salvation. But it’s hard to make such prayers.

The Hymn Shop’s Still Open

All right, I had to select this one myself–Yield Not to Temptation (1868), with Nathan trading in his auto-harp for a mandolin. I love the way this hymn sounds with a mandolin.

Funny about that 19th century: so many terrible ideas that have damaged the world no end, like Marxism and Darwinism; and yet so many beautiful hymns that we still love today.

The hymn shop is open to all, and I’m looking for requests, so don’t be shy! If there’s a hymn you want to hear, just scroll down and leave me a request. I’ll be sure to see it.

Hymn, ‘Yield Not to Temptation’

There are a lot of nice versions of this good old hymn, but I liked best this simple piano rendition–with the lyrics given, so you can sing along. Sing louder! For our God will hear us.

Please, everybody, feel free to suggest your favorite hymns so I can post them here. For this hymn shop to work, your participation is a must.

Hymn, ‘Yield Not to Temptation’

This is another hymn I remember from my Sunday school days, before my church got all hypermodern and theologically bent out of shape. I’d be surprised if they still sang this one, ever.

I chose this plain and simple piano version, with printed lyrics so you can follow along.

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.

Serve the Lord with gladness: come before His presence with singing.

–Psalm 100: 1-2
