By Request, ‘On Jordan’s Bank’

This is not a Christmas carol, but it is sort of an Advent hymn, so I’m letting it into the contest

Requested by Phoebe–On Jordan’s Bank, sung by the St. Edmondsbury Cathedral Choir.

This hymn is actually listed as an Advent hymn both in our parish hymnals and in Liturgy of the Hours breviaries for English-speaking nations. What’s interesting, too, is that the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord is the closing Sunday of the entire Advent/Christmas season in the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church. So I guess it’s both an Advent and Christmas hymn.

In any case, I really like the hymn. It seems to encompass the waiting, the arrival, and the promise of final fulfillment.
