‘Hyfrydol’ (Welsh Hymn)

No one has requested any hymns so far today, so I’ll go with one of my favorites. Hyfrydol provides the melody a number of hymns. In our church’s hymnal, it was just “Welsh Hymn.” Here, by the Black Mountain Choir and the Welsh National Opera Orchestra.

Welsh Hymn, ‘Hyfrydol’

Hyfrydol has been a favorite of mine ever since Sunday school. There are several sets of English lyrics written for it, but here it is in its original Welsh, sung by the Black Mountain Choir. I don’t understand a single word of it–but I don’t think I have to. The hymn speaks to me anyway! Turn up the volume, and imagine yourself standing somewhere on the mountain in the picture…

Beautiful! ‘Hyfrydol’ in Welsh

You don’t have to understand the language to appreciate the hymn. I don’t know how many different sets of lyrics there are for this traditional Welsh hymn; every denomination seems to have its own. But here it is in Welsh, sung by the Black Mountain Choir. I don’t understand a word of it, and yet it speaks to me. I hope it does to you, too. Lord, hear all our prayers, and be not far from us today.
