By Request, ‘There’s a New Kid in Town’

This request comes from Susan: There’s a New Kid in Town, by Alan Jackson. Mellow–very mellow.

By Request, ‘For Unto Us a Child is Born’

Requested by Joshua, For Unto Us a Child is Born: part of Handel’s Messiah, sung a capella by GLAD.

By Request, ‘Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming’

Requested by Jan, Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming–a German carol from the 16th century. It’s one of those melodies that many of us know, without remembering where it came from. Hauntingly lovely.

‘Gaudete’ (“Rejoice, Christ Is Born”)

No Christmas  carol requests this morning, so let me see if I can start the ball rolling. So far, What Child Is This? leads the contest with 22 views, the day it was posted.

I am not eligible to win my own contest, so I hereby submit Gaudete, a medieval carol performed by the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, and the London Cello Orchestra. And drums! Turn up the volume on this one.

By Request, ‘Angels We Have Heard on High’

An old favorite, requested by Joshua–Angels We Have Heard on High, by Acapella.

I’m always much impressed by people who have mastered the art of using their voices as musical instruments, for the glory of God–maybe because I can’t.

By Request, ‘Christ Whose Glory Fills the Skies’

Requested by Jan (“Janowrite”), Charles Wesley’s Christ Whose Glory Fills the Skies, sung by the choir at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Worcester, Massachusetts–an Advent hymn.

Keep ’em comin’, folks!

By Request, ‘I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day’

Ach, there go my water-works again! I can’t help it. I’m overcome by the beauty and the love of Christmas, and all the Christmases in my life.

This just in from Erlene, a request for I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day. This carol brings a lot of Christmases back to me. I chose the Bing Crosby version.

“Peace on earth, good will to men” will indeed come to pass: for the LORD hath spoken it.

By Request, ‘God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen’

Heidi asked for this one, the first request this morning: God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. I opted for this by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band–there’s something about their 18th-century sound that goes just right with this hymn.

By Request, ‘A Christmas Alleluiah’

Requested by Erlene, A Christmas Alleluiah, sung by Chris Tomlin with some help from his friends–keep those carols coming, folks. We defy the un-wisdom of this fallen world. Christ the Savior is born!

By Request, ‘Silent Night’

A reader in Japan asks for this German hymn, which I find sung quite beautifully in Irish… Well, that’s what Christmas is about, isn’t it? God’s Temple is to be the house of prayer for all nations. And someday it surely will be.

Requested by Joshua, sung by Enya.
