Supremes to Trump: ‘Yes, You Can’

The Supreme Court has upheld President Donald Trump’s plan to cut some 1,350 jobs from the U.S. Dept. of Education–a “mass layoff” (https://www.govexec.com/workforce/2025/07/education-dept-can-proceed-mass-layoffs-after-supreme-court-ruling/406714/).

There seems a fair amount of courtroom wrangling yet to do; but for the time being, the Dept. of Education is under a sword of Damocles. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon says the ultimate purpose here is to dismantle the Dept. of Education.

Now why would anybody want to do that?

Are you kidding? Do you want me to count the ways?

The DOE is a bloated bureaucracy that serves the teachers’ unions and wastes the public’s money. For most of our history we didn’t have one. We could probably go back to not having a DOE and no one would notice.

Democrats argue that it’s unlawful to wipe out a government agency, established by legislation, by chopping its budget. So far it’s 6-3 for our side on the Supreme Court.

Donald Trump–Superstar!

Boy howdy, if the bad guys in Iran had seen this video, they might not have pulled Trump’s chain!

Back in 2009, now-President Donald Trump, then a New York City and media bigwig (“You’re fired!”) had a feud going with Vince McMahon, president of the World Wrestling Federation. They decided to let proxies duke it out in the ring; but that went south in a hurry, and the next thing we knew, Trump was bouncing McMahon off the floor.

It was 16 years ago. (I’m not so sure about the dates given on line, so suffice it to say this happened quite a while ago. I saw it on my own TV.)

Fast forward: Trump has appointed McMahon’s daughter Secretary of Education.

Democrats hate her, too.

‘Adios’ to U.S. Dept. of Education–Today?

Jimmy Carter, who oversaw the Education Department's ...

The legacy of Jimmy Carter

First let me say that my entire educational experience happened before Congress and Jimmy Carter created the Dept. of Education in 1979. I can’t think of anything I’ve seen or heard of that has made American education better since then: and I say that as someone who has spent hundreds of days teaching in public school.

Today–yes, today–President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order to shut down the Dept. of Education (https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/trump-administration/trump-set-sign-executive-order-shuttering-department-education-rcna197191). For the hysterical set, this does NOT mean “shutting down the schools.”

The new Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, has already dismissed half the DOE workforce. (Alarmists take note: this is not “firing the teachers.”)

The president can’t wave a magic wand and make the DOE disappear. The plan seems to be “to make it nearly impossible for remaining employees to carry out their work.”

It’s going to lead up to a helluva war with the teachers’ unions.

But we used to be able to do without them, too.

The Price of Elitist Hubris: Trump Drops the Hammer on Columbia

Donald Trump and Linda McMahon: the game has changed

Well, well! It looks like hoity-toity liberal colleges can’t do just anything they please. Like turning a blind eye to antisemitism on campus, and non-compliance with anti-discrimination laws.

The big shots at Columbia University thought they could. That’s gonna cost ’em $400 million–8% of their budget–(https://nypost.com/2025/03/07/us-news/trump-admin-yanks-400m-from-columbia-university-over-antisemitism/). Suck it up, dindles! That’s $400 million down the drain: President Trump has pulled your grants and canceled your contracts.

America’s brand-new Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, warned colleges and universities that schools that try to be like Columbia will wind up having to pay like Columbia.

Some of these people need to get out more often. The world isn’t like they think it is.

Trump: Dissolve U.S. Dept. of Education

Linda McMahon–the last U.S. Secretary of Education?

Many of you have surely heard this news already; but I’ve looked forward for years to write this story.

President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order to dismantle the federal Dept. of Education (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/education-department-executive-order-eliminated-trump/). It was first reported that he would do this today, but it hasn’t happened yet, so who knows?

Why abolish the Dept. of Education?

America, the president said, is No.1 in the world when it comes to per-pupil costs, but only No. 40 (out of forty!) in the quality of the end product. Some $881 million–including $101 million for teachers’ “DEI training”–has vanished down the rabbit hole: according to Trump, “hundreds of millions of dollars in wasteful spending.”

Well, we always knew that about the Dept. of Education, didn’t we? Classroom hours squandered on belting the students with left-wing propaganda, programs to “transition” children to the opposite sex without parental knowledge or consent, etc., etc.

Can the president do this? Can he make it stop?

Frankly, I’m not sure. Congress created the DOE. A bill to get rid of it, we presume, would also have to pass through Congress. Donald Trump knows this. He must have something up his sleeve.

Meanwhile, Democrats and teachers’ unions are screaming bloody murder.

America rose to greatness without a federal Dept. of Education. It didn’t exist until the feckless Jimmy Carter ushered it in.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens next.
