A Writer’s Nightmare

Man Sinking In Quicksand In Movie Scene by Bettmann

“Eeyaaagh….!”

Just to give you a little glimpse into what I’m up against, these days–

Last night I dreamed I was desperately trying to get back to work on my novels. First I couldn’t find the manuscript. When I did, all the pages were out of order and had to be sorted. And then I finally found the title page:

THE MORASS

By Lee Duigon

Holy cow! What is this? I never wrote anything about a morass. The only morass I know is the one I’m stuck in. I can’t remember the story line. I don’t know where the rest of the novel is.

I am glad it was only a dream.

The working title of this novel is Ozias, Prince Enthroned; and I have it all scrawled down in longhand.

It’ll be ready when I am.

I’m Wiped Out

Sorry, but I’m knocked out, weary, etc. We have to go to the hospital again this afternoon–to get to a weekend of staying home, watching movies, and not having to take my chemo pills again till Monday.

If I could just get rid of those &%$#^ bladder stones! But the cancer has to come first. Until then, all I can do is pray for a decent night’s sleep.

We’ve also had to do some work on Ozias, Prince in Peril. My primary editor, Susan, lost those first several chapter sets when the hurricane messed up her computer. Good thing we had them stored here! And the rest of Prince Enthroned has to be typed up and submitted for editing.

I still feel normal while I’m working on my books. It seems my host of symptoms can’t follow me into Obann. Thank you for that, Lord!

Finished!

Hallelujah! Finished! Ozias, Prince Enthroned–I was stuck, I asked the Lord to show me where to stop… and He has. A perfect place to stop. But as Bill White used to say on double-header days, “Plenty of baseball left, folks!”

The next book, Ozias, King Betrayed, is already generating notes. Lots and lots to think about! But I pray I now have several months available for that.

I had to level the karma of the bad guys, but there will always be more of them waiting to come on stage.

Of course, I still have to type it up and send it to my editors, and that’ll take a good while. That gives me another chance to make sure everything in the story is as it should be. There’s always a letdown when a book is finished, but at least I have another book waiting for me.

Trying, Trying…

My tongue hasn’t turned blue, but that’s about all I can say for myself today.

I’m trying to finish writing my new novel, Ozias, Prince Enthroned, but all this cancer and chemo business is wearing me out.

Our Stop & Shop is closing, so now we have to go to Shop-Rite. We expected an easy shopping trip this morning, but didn’t get one. It turns out that this is “Coupon Week,” so the store was jam-packed, people buying like they’re stocking up the fallout shelter, and we stood in the checkout line for 20 minutes.

And then of course came the daily trip to the hospital.

Somehow I just couldn’t wade into the nooze today. I’ll try to do better tomorrow. Nothin’ was gonna happen today anyhow–right? (He’s afraid to look.)

King Ozias (Plus Cats & Boxes)

I have to go back to the hospital this afternoon, but first I managed to crank out another four pages of Ozias, Prince Enthroned. I’ve never had so many obstacles to writing a book; but maybe I’ll finish this one by Halloween.

For the time being, I have a bonus critter video as a sanity break. Cats love us, but they also have the power to amuse us. Amazing, how much fun cats and kittens can have with a cardboard box.

I’m just not up to posting any more nooze today.

When You Hear the Bell, Come Out Writing"

I’ve just finished doing my author’s edit of Ozias, Prince in Peril. I thought it would be pretty good; but it’s better than that. Primary editing by Kathy Leonard: no one does it better.

Any day now, Ocean of Time will go on sale–in time for Christmas. I love the cover Kirk DouPonce created for it.

I’m almost finished writing Ozias, Prince Enthroned, and then after that, God willing, will be Ozias, King Betrayed.

Keep working. Stay sane. I try to live up to that.

Progress on My Book (I Hope)

Physical therapy this morning, and waiting for various doctors to schedule me for chemotherapy (not looking forward to that!).

But at least it’s a sunny day, and I took advantage of it to set up outside and crank our four more pages of Ozias, Prince Enthroned. A major battle is shaping up, but I think Maressa’s lost her nerve. She wants a parley; her allies are infuriated.

In case you were wondering where I get this material, I can tell you that I’ve patterned this looming battle after Hannibal’s fight at Lake Trasimene. I’ve even named the terrain “Lake Trasm.”

I’m fast approaching the climax of the book and don’t know what I’ll do with myself once it’s finished. Well, I do have to type it all. And I have to finish editing Ozias, Prince in Peril. It feels like an age since I wrote it.

And Ocean of Time will be coming out any day now–so dream up some gang-busting names for as yet uncreated new characters. Contest winner gets an autographed book.

Today… and Tomorrow

Today being so mild, sunny, and beautiful, I bowed out of my physical therapy appointment, set up my chair outside, and cranked out six more pages of Ozias, Prince Enthroned. And now I have to get started editing Prince in Peril.

Tomorrow I must submit to an MRI so they can decide what to do with me next. I don’t feel sick, but I do feel rather unspeakably menaced.

I put the picture of the horsemen up there because Ozias had to fight a battle. Tomorrow it’s my turn. God was with Ozias. I pray He’s there for me.

These past few days, about the only time I feel normal is when I’m writing my book, Ozias, Prince Enthroned. The rest of the time, the arthritis in my hip and leg beats up on me non-stop… and the cancer diagnosis is a serious distraction. Next Wednesday they’ll give me a pelvic MRI. I’ve had worse.

Ah! But is it a good book? Well, I’m the last one on the planet who can tell you that. If it were a bad one, it wouldn’t be a comfort to me. I’m now in what I expect to be the final set of chapters. To me it seems so far, so good. But Steve McQueen once said you could say that before you hit the ground after falling out of a third-story window. [Numerous points for knowing in which movie he said that.]

Heading into a battle in which he’ll be outnumbered three to one, King Ozias is distracted by the fleeting presence of a prophet who might not be a man, but an angel. His enemy, Queen Maressa, has also seen it. I already know how this is going to turn out, but that’s all I dare say about it.

Other than that I’m very thankful that God has given me this work. I’ll try to do my very best.

Oh, This Day!

I started this day with a sense of panic creeping over me. Instead of working on my book in the early afternoon, as is my custom, I sat outside this morning and wrote four more pages of Ozias, Prince Enthroned. I do feel better for having done that.

We are waiting for a doctor’s phone call; then we’ll have to go out and buy medical supplies and groceries for the weekend. He should’ve called by now, but of course he hasn’t. *Sigh*

Some cooler weather would be a big help. I know that some of you are feeling no better today than I am. You are all in my daily prayers.

I guess I ought to write a little more as we’re waiting for that call.
