Dreary Weather… Send in the Rats

It’s a grey, dreary, drizzly day out here in New Jersey, I can’t stop yawning, and I’ve heard a lot of my friends have come down with we don’t know what.

I think we need a “Relax and enjoy it” video.

Here are three pet rats playing tag. I used to let our rats loose on the living room floor, but they never went very far before scampering back to me. I was flattered. Heck, what must a human look like, to a rat?

Two Silly Rats

Once upon a time my sister gave us a pair of white rats for Christmas. They were tame, affectionate, playful… with us humans.

But when it was bed-time and we turned out the lights, we would hear, coming from the rats’ aquarium, thump-thump-thump-thud-SQUEEEEEAK! And I’d turn the light back on, only to find the two little characters innocently sitting in the cedar shavings… as if to say “Fight? What fight? Who’s fightin’? We don’t know what you’re talking about, boss.”

At least they never hurt each other.

Pet Rats, Anyone?

We had two rats for a while. They were affectionate and playful… although they sometimes fought after we turned out the lights. ThumpthumpthumpthumpSQUEEEEK!!! And then I’d turn the lights back on, to find these two innocent rats who wouldn’t dream of fighting. Yeah, sure.

Bonus Video: A Dog’s ‘Emotional Support’ Animal

(What do I have to do to get a “Like” today? Maybe this’ll work.)

The dog can’t stand getting groomed. He has to have his “emotional support” rat–yes, a rat–or it’s a no-go. And the rat gets groomed, too.

We had pet rats and they were wonderful, but we never thought of having them professionally groomed. They groomed each other, groomed themselves. Would’ve groomed us, too, had we asked for it.

Let Sleeping Cats Lie

This pet rat knows the cat won’t hurt her. Rats are very smart, affectionate, and make good pets. The cat wants to take a nap, the rat wants to play. I’m guessing the cat will eventually give in.

We didn’t have a cat when we had our rats. I think Peep would have been very glad to have a rat for a cuddle buddy, but I don’t know about any of the others. All I can say from experience is that both cats and rats learn to behave in ways that might surprise you.

And that’s our critter video for today.
