Two Silly Rats

Once upon a time my sister gave us a pair of white rats for Christmas. They were tame, affectionate, playful… with us humans.

But when it was bed-time and we turned out the lights, we would hear, coming from the rats’ aquarium, thump-thump-thump-thud-SQUEEEEEAK! And I’d turn the light back on, only to find the two little characters innocently sitting in the cedar shavings… as if to say “Fight? What fight? Who’s fightin’? We don’t know what you’re talking about, boss.”

At least they never hurt each other.

Have I Lost My Marbles?

Nah, I’m all right–I just felt like hearing this: That Happy Feeling, by Bert Kaempfert and his orchestra, from way back when. As one of the theme songs for Sandy Becker’s show, it was a staple of my childhood. I’m glad I’ve not forgotten it.

This Day So Far

Common toad | The Wildlife Trusts

(Gee, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen one of these…)

Well! Got up early to go to the hospital for another blood test, then an hour of physical therapy, then off to a nearby medi-center to get a couple bottles of barium for some scans they want to do on Monday.

Among other things I’d rather do than this stuff, it’d be nice listen to a few toads calling at night. It’s really quite melodious, and they don’t do rap music.

Sitting on the deck of our rented shore house, watching the sun go down over Barnegat Bay. You can hear the toads there, too.

Grandma Moses Country (‘Memory Lane’ Contest, Day 13)

This is the next-to-last day of our Memory Lane Contest. Anyone can enter, as often as you like: just post your memories here.

Here’s one from me.

Many years ago, my Grammie visited her folks in the Pennsylvania hills. I went, too.

How wonderful that was! Everybody–three generations, at least–lived in this enormous, rambling old house. There was always someone available to play checkers, stroll down to the brook, or shoot at targets with slingshots. We stayed for a week; and I’m sure I missed seeing large sections of the house.

It was like being in a Grandma Moses painting. No other experience in all my life was quite like it.

And now it’s your turn, folks.

A Night’s Fishing (‘Memory Lane’ Contest, Day 12)

Weakfish Mystique - On The Water

Back when we used to have vacations at the shore, I went out to the dock one night to try a spot of fishing. By and by, I got a bite–a very hefty bite. I reeled it in and was rewarded with a giant weakfish. I don’t like to think of how many people I woke up with my jubilant “Yahoo!” I returned to the house in triumph, and we got several nice suppers out of this.

Now it’s your turn! Trot out one of your favorite memories and post it here–only two days left in the contest, so do it now. You could win an autographed book or a custom T-shirt. Post ’em right here.

Tommy’s Pond (‘Memory Lane’ Contest, Day 11)

Patty and I went out to sit by Tommy’s Pond this morning. Memories galore! All four seasons’ worth. Here we skated, sledded, fished, and tried to catch frogs. It was a big part of my childhood. I caught a newt here once–wow! I can’t decide which season was my favorite, at Tommy’s Pond. Just watching the little pumpkinseed sunfish guarding their nests was a treat.

Post your memories here for our Memory Lane Contest–only three more days to go, and then we’ll have the winner. All viewers, even first-timers, are welcome: enter as often as you like. You could sin a book or a T-shirt.
