Is the GOP a Broken Reed?

Isaiah 36:6 See, you trust in the staff of this broken reed ...

With an Assyrian invasion looming, Isaiah warned the people of Judah not to put their trust in Egypt: “Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean., it will pierce his hand: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him” (Isaiah 36:6).

It’s looking more and more like an accurate description of today’s Republican Party.

When I was active in politics in the 1990s, our county GOP chairman blew us off with “When I want your advice, I’ll ask for it.” We were only trying to help the party win an election now and then, but the party mucky-mucks weren’t interested. Being No. 2 didn’t make them try harder. That’s how we wound up with a town under one-party rule: no Republicans on the ballot anymore.

Thanks to what Democrats laughingly call “government,” our country is in deep trouble. You’d think Republicans would rally around Donald Trump to get us out from under a regular festival of misrule–broken borders, weaponized Justice Dept., transgender mania, censorship, inflation… the list goes on and on.

And the Republicans in Congress gird up their loins and pass a Democrat budget. Wasn’t there something about them being an opposition party? Nah–too much trouble.

They are a broken reed that pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it.

Ask God to send us leaders who can and will actually help us! It shouldn’t be Donald Trump just standing alone between us and the collapse of our republic. The history of Rome tells us how a perfectly good republic can be wrecked. Pray we can somehow stay clear of those already-charted shoals.
