My Next Book

Battles in the Wars of the Roses | Schoolshistory.org.uk

I’m boning up on the Wars of the Roses because I really want to write the life of King Ozias, King Ryons’ ancestor, the last anointed king of Obann. Ozias, who wrote many of the Sacred Songs and was spiritually sustained by them, was born into a turbulent and dangerous time.

His father, the gentle and easygoing King Flosi II, lost his throne to treason. His mother, Queen Parella, escaped to Lintum Forest with her child, the crown prince. For most of his boyhood Ozias learned the ways of the forest and how to survive there. The usurpers in Obann City sought again and again to murder him, and he and his mother had many narrow escapes.

Quite a few readers have noted the resemblances between Ozias and David. It has always been my intention that they should. Both kings put their trust in God. And attentive readers know it was Ozias, in obedience to the words of a prophet, Batha the Seer, who erected God’s Bell on the summit of Bell Mountain.

Anyway, there’s a lot to this story and when the weather decides to cooperate, I look forward to telling it.

Even if it takes more than one book.

Eureka! (New Book!)

The Evolution of Life on Earth — The Beast of the Uint Mountains, Uintatherium...

Uintatherium: I really must find a way to bring this animal into the story.

Okay! I’ve got a way to start the book, I’ve got a climax, and I’ve got a new villain! I don’t have a title yet, but I think what I do have is sufficient to get the next book started. Maybe tomorrow, if it doesn’t rain.

You may think it strange that the first thing that comes to me is the climax of the story, but it’s happened before. It gives me a goal toward which I can steer the story.

Will Jack and Ellayne get married? Will the new government in Obann City survive? And what about that ancient artifact that seems to show the distant future? The villain’s name is Gree, and he used to be the curator of Lord Reesh’s museum of ancient artifacts. He’s now a self-styled philosopher, and it’s a very big mistake to trust him.

And what about that huge armada that’s going to be launched at the defenseless city of Durmurot?

I’ve got to get all these matters taken care of before the next snow falls.

And I’m going to love doing it.

Back to Lintum Forest!

Ornitholestes

Okay, I’ve gotten my feet wet, written the opening scene for Bell Mountain No. 14. The working title is Behold!, but that could change. For the time being, I’m back in Lintum Forest with Helki the Rod, encountering a strange creature that wasn’t there before. The picture, somebody’s reconstruction of the dinosaur Ornitholestes, is a good approximation of what Helki saw.

Roald Amundsen, overeager to be the first to the South Pole (which of course he ultimately did), launched his trek some weeks too early and had to retreat back to his base, driven back by bad weather. They get a lot of that in Antarctica. I hope I haven’t repeated his mistake, embarking on a new book before I’m completely ready. But it takes time to write these, I have to work outside when I’m writing fiction, and I need to finish before the cold weather returns. Any prayers for my success will be appreciated.

What’s the secret of the Abnak girl, Qeqa, who claims to be allied with beings that only she can see? Will the new government in Obann City be able to cope with the challenges of a shaken world? Is there an evil empire in the distant west, across the sea, preparing to invade Obann?

I need to learn the answers to these questions.
