‘I Will Enter His Gates With Thanksgiving in My Heart’

By reader request–here’s one I never heard of, but it certainly has a lot of go to it, and strongly echoes Psalm 100 ( “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise”).

Sing, Christians, so our King can hear us praise Him.

‘The Great I Am’

Reader Weavingword, this one’s for you, at your request. I was going to save it for tomorrow, but why not this evening?

For those of you who feel a bit tentative about requesting “Christian music” that is not technically a hymn, because it doesn’t appear in a hymnal–hey, no problem. The lyrics of this particular song would certainly not be out of place in a hymnal.

Some churches, I am told, don’t even use a hymnal anymore. Well, we needn’t get too involved just now in what some of the churches get up to.

Everybody else out there–this is an evil age. Sing louder.

‘Watches of the Night’–a Song for King Ryons?

My editor, Susan, wanted me to see this: first a poem, Watches of the Night, and then a song, Jesus, Draw Me Nearer, performed by Keith and Kristin Getty.

It’s beautiful, and full of echoes of the Book of Psalms. But to Susan it also brought to mind a character in my Bell Mountain books–Ryons, the slave boy who is rescued from human sacrifice to become, by God’s grace, the King of Obann.

Ryons doesn’t want to be a king. What does he know about such things? He has hardly had a proper childhood. He hates sending men who love him into battle, and they might not return. He’s terrified of some of the things he has to do, some of the places he has to go. But what he learns is faith and obedience, and going on when you’re too scared to go, and following God’s angel when you don’t know where he’s taking you.

I am very humbly glad that anything I could write might be linked to such beautiful and prayerful music as this.

But I tell you right up front, it wasn’t any literary genius of mine, but only writing what God gave me. To Him be the glory!

‘A Heart Like Mine’

OK, if I haven’t messed up the technical side of this operation, here we have Bryan Duncan with A Heart Like Mine–by request of Patty, my wife.

The enemy sits in high places, boasting himself against the Lord.

Christians, sing louder.

‘Mystery of Mercy’

Before I resume delving into the demise of our civilization, by reader request, here’s Mystery of Mercy. I hope you like it.

We post hymns here because we want the Lord to hear us. We declare before Him that the evil deeds of this age are done without our consent and against our will. And we pray He will bring us all back to sanity.

Hymn, ‘It Is Well With My Soul’

By popular demand–well, by one reader, but I have to start somewhere–here’s It Is Well With My Soul.

God grant that it be so for all of us, His people.

Hymn, ‘Our Father Who Art in Heaven’

By reader request, here’s Our Father Who Art in Heaven, performed by Don Moen.

I don’t know when this happened in my life, but at some point not too long ago, I began to perceive that God is a person. That’s why He made us persons, in His image. And this changed everything.

He couldn’t love us if He weren’t a person; but He is, so He does.

Hymn, ‘I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say’

By reader request–and I don’t know who these performers are, but they do a lovely job.

I’m also not altogether sure I’ve got the hymn that was actually requested. So, Jaroc, let me know if this was the one you wanted. If not, I’ll go back for another look.

But this one will certainly do to start the day.

‘Untitled Hymn’ (‘Come to Jesus’)

By reader request (hooray, somebody listened!), here is the Untitled Hymn by Chris Rice.

Knowing I prefer old hymns, the reader was a little tentative about requesting a new one. Well, my preferences aren’t so terribly important. And anyhow, new hymns that stand the test of time will be good old hymns someday.

‘There Will Be Peace in the Valley’

They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.  Isaiah 11:9

By reader request, here is…. Elvis Presley?

If anyone as late as yesterday had suggested I’d be posting Elvis Presley here, I would have boggled at the thought. But God gave Elvis a beautiful singing voice, and here he uses it to praise the Lord. The lyrics are modeled after Isaiah Chapter 11. And it really is a nice hymn, and I’m glad somebody called my attention to it.

Just don’t ask me to post any “Christian rap,” folks. But I hope you’ve enjoyed Elvis’ piece.
