Hymn, ‘Give Thanks’

By request (here you go, Linda), here’s Give Thanks, performed by the Maranatha Singers.

Gee, I feel like Ed Sullivan.

Well, now we’ve got to go off to the nursing home to see my aunt, and I pray we find her well.

‘I Know that My Redeemer Liveth’

One of the readers here, Laura, mentioned this hymn a while back, before I’d learned how to post videos and pictures. I post it now because it goes to the heart of our faith.

The music is by Handel, part of The Messiah. The words were uttered by Job, when he had lost everything and was on the brink of death himself: “I know that my redeemer liveth… Yet in my flesh shall I see Him.”

Yes! Oh, yes!

Hymn, ‘O God, My God, I Seek Your Face’

By reader request.

I don’t know this hymn, so I hope I picked the right one. The a capella arrangement is very nice.

Hymn, ‘You Raise Me Up’

By reader request, here’s You Raise Me Up. Linda, I hope you like this version by Celtic Woman.

Hymn, ‘Mary, Did You Know?’

My editor, Susan, requested this Christmas song. I’d never heard of it before, it’s new and I don’t much keep up with what’s new–but this is nice. And the lyrics are Biblically right, too.

So here it is, folks, enjoy it.

***P.S.–The Comment Contest is almost over! If you put up the 4,000th comment, you’ll win a copy of one of my books, your choice. (But go easy on Bell Mountain, I don’t have many copies left.) If you win a book and would like me to sign it, please remember to mention it.

Hymn, ‘Bread of Heaven’

Welsh miners singing in How Green Was My Valley (English subtitles)

Once upon a time, on a little 15-minute Christian radio show whose name I can’t remember, I heard a woman say a very wise thing.

“When your faith is shaky; when you don’t know for sure, anymore, that God is with you; when the bad things in life keep piling up; when you just don’t know what’s what–

“That’s when you have to sing louder!”

What can I say but Amen?

Hymn: ‘Jesu, Joy of Men’s Desiring’

We usually hear this beautiful hymn around Christmastime, but there’s nothing wrong with hearing it now. In fact, after a week of watching Satan’s vandals trash our civilization, I need it now. It reminds me that God already has the answer to our self-imposed prison sentence in a fallen world. God will regenerate His creation through His Son, Jesus Christ.

So here it is–music by J.S. Bach, wonderful performance, and hope provided by the King of Kings.

Hymn, ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’

This hymn has been in my head all morning, so I thought I’d share it with you.

This is one of those hymns that go straight to your heart: open the door and let it in.

I’ve selected an a capella version because I couldn’t find one with just a piano and the congregation singing.

A Wonderful Welsh Hymn

This is “Hyfrydol,” one of my very favorite hymns–an old Welsh hymn, here sung in Welsh by a Welsh choir.

No, I don’t understand the words. Somehow I don’t have to. The Holy Spirit is in this hymn, and I hear Him loud and clear. It moves me, stirs me–I wouldn’t care to try to speak aloud, just now.

We used to sing this in the Dutch Reformed Church, with Dutch Reformed lyrics. The Catholics have Catholic lyrics for it. I prefer the original Welsh, though I don’t understand a single word of it.

Hear the voice of the Spirit. Honor the Lord on the Sabbath. Not a bad idea, BTW, to honor Him every day of the year.
