‘Pat-a-Pan’

I’ve always loved this old, old Burgundian Christmas carol, Pat-a-Pan. Here we have it performed by Yure Lytkin (mandolin)  and friends… in what seems to be somebody’s living room.

“Willi, bring your little drum…” Fife and drum for Christmas. It has always worked for me.

Our Christmas, 2024

So this year it’ll be no Christmas tree, no Christmas lights. and Christmas dinner three days early because you can’t keep it that long. I just don’t have the strength this year. I could never get a tree through the door–not after 6 weeks in a hospital bed.

I have a feeling it’ll be very moving. Just Jesus. And family memories. Yeah, that’ll work. Next Christmas we can trot out the ornaments.

Meanwhile… What will our Elf on the Shelf do, still stuffed into the closet? Our Elf was always very careful not to involve our cats in any of his activities. “And you see how they reward me!” he snarls.

I guess I’ll have to leave a cookie on the table.

By Request, ‘O Holy Night’

Requested by SemperSoloDeoGloria, we have O Holy Night performed by Tomee Profit with Tauren Wells and Svircina.

I’ve never heard it done so energetically.

By Request: ‘Unto Us a Son is Given’

We can’t celebrate Christmas without Handel’s Messiah, can we? This version of Unto Us a Son Is Given is by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Requested by Thewhiterabbit.

[Ach! I want my cigar! But now it’s snowing. Well, I think I’ll break for a while and watch it come down.]

By Request: ‘Joy to the World’

I couldn’t find the version Erlene requested–but you can’t post Christmas carols and leave our Joy to the World, can you? I don’t know who these performers are, but I like the way they sing this hymn.

[Sorry there’s no Christmas Carol Contest this year. I can’t see it prospering with such a late start.]

By Request: ‘The Holly and the Ivy’

Requested by Phoebe, sung by Mediaeval Baebes–The Holly and Ivy. Gee, I was all set to post this before I heard from anybody.

I am too weak this year to trim a Christmas tree, let alone bring it through the door. So we’ll need a lot of hymns.

Hymn: The Little Drummer Boy

Can I possibly make this post… work?

By Request, ‘Gospel Quartet’

Elder Mike wanted to share this video with you, so here it is–“Gospel Quartet.” It has this going for it: it’s very funny! And God knows I can use a laugh today.

I don’t know how much of this performance is for real. Just relax and enjoy it.

‘Gesu Bambino’ (Pavarotti & Osborne)

I don’t know why my spirit called for this hymn today–Gesu Bambino, sung by Luciano Pavarotti and Joan Osborne. Brings me to tears, too.

A dash of Christmas, any time, can’t be a bad thing.

‘God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen’

I can’t explain why I decided to post this Christmas hymn today, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen. All I can say is, my heart cried out for it this morning.

And now I know where to put the comma in the title.

Sung by the Magdalen College Choir.
